A live-action Cyberpunk 2077 feature film is in motion. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Paramount Pictures — the studio behind Mission: Impossible, Top Gun, and Sonic the Hedgehog — is developing a live-action adaptation.
What was reported is a live-action feature, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura of Transformers fame producing and CD PROJEKT RED said to be co-producing. That said, the director, screenwriter, cast, and release window are all unannounced as of October 2026.
The important part is that this story doesn’t stop at “reported.” CD PROJEKT RED co-CEO Michał Nowakowski called Paramount a “future partner” in a post dated October 8, 2026, which effectively backs the report up.
This article separates what comes from official statements and what comes from reporting. It also covers the relationship to the separate live-action project announced in 2023, and the anime sequel that starts streaming on October 20.
What is actually confirmed? Drawing the line between reporting and official statements
The only thing officially verifiable as of October 2026 is that CD PROJEKT RED has acknowledged Paramount as a future partner. The details of the film itself rest on Deadline’s reporting.
| Item | Details | Strength of the information |
|---|---|---|
| Partnership with Paramount | Referred to as a future partner | Stated officially by CDPR’s co-CEO |
| Form of the project | Live-action feature film | Deadline report |
| Producer | Lorenzo di Bonaventura | Deadline report |
| CDPR’s involvement | Participating as a producer | Deadline report |
| Director, screenwriter, cast | Unannounced | No announcement as of October 2026 |
| Release window | Unannounced | No announcement as of October 2026 |
I built this table because a Cyberpunk 2077 screen adaptation has been described as “moving forward” many times without ever taking shape. It’s worth keeping track of which row carries which strength of information.
What exactly did CD PROJEKT RED say?
Co-CEO Michał Nowakowski laid out his expectations for Paramount in a post dated October 8, 2026.
We’re excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time.

There are two ways to read this. One is as an acknowledgment of the fact that they are working with Paramount. The other is in the choice of the phrase “shares our creative ambitions.” That hints at a stance beyond selling a license and walking away — they intend to be involved in how it gets made.
Then he added “at the appropriate time.” In other words, this is a stage where he can’t say more. It follows that no director, screenwriter, or cast has surfaced, and if anything it reads like CDPR is the side holding the timing of the announcement.
What happened to the 2023 live-action project?
In October 2023, CD PROJEKT RED announced a live-action project with Anonymous Content. However, it was still described as being in early stages as of August 2025, and its relationship to the Paramount situation has not been clarified.
This is the part I’m most curious about. Whether this is the same project continuing under a new partner or an entirely separate one, there is nothing to judge by right now. Three years have passed since the 2023 announcement, so it wouldn’t be strange for the project to have been reshuffled.
Honestly, with game adaptations, more projects vanish between announcement and release than make it. The 2023 news looked like that pattern. With a major studio like Paramount attached and CDPR’s co-CEO putting the name out himself, this feels like the stage where it has finally started to seem real.
How strong is the game’s track record?
Cyberpunk 2077 has passed 40 million copies worldwide since its 2020 launch. The 2023 expansion Phantom Liberty logged 15 million on its own.
The setting is the megacity of Night City. It’s an open-world RPG about people who have swapped their bodies for machinery trying to survive in a world where corporations outweigh nations. A title that was hammered for bugs at launch grew its numbers to this point through fixes and an anime rollout.
A base of 40 million copies is more than enough reason for a film project to exist. On top of that, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, co-produced by CD PROJEKT RED and TRIGGER, streams exclusively on Netflix starting October 20, 2026. It’s a sequel with an entirely new cast of characters.
The decisive difference from 2023 is that the live-action talk is arriving when there is already a screen track record. What Edgerunners proved is that this world works on screen.

Summary: where the Cyberpunk 2077 live-action film stands
An exclusive Deadline report revealed that Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 feature. Lorenzo di Bonaventura of Transformers is producing, and CD PROJEKT RED is said to be co-producing.
CD PROJEKT RED co-CEO Michał Nowakowski welcomed Paramount as a future partner in a post dated October 8, 2026, and said more details would be shared at the appropriate time. Meanwhile, the director, screenwriter, cast, and release window are all unannounced as of October 2026.
The game itself has passed 40 million copies worldwide since its 2020 launch, and the 2023 expansion Phantom Liberty reached 15 million. The live-action project announced with Anonymous Content in October 2023 was still described as early stage as of August 2025, and its relationship to this one is unknown. The anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 streams exclusively on Netflix on October 20, 2026.
If this were reporting alone, waiting it out would have been fine, but CDPR’s co-CEO saying Paramount’s name in his own words changes things. And he phrased it as “shares our creative ambitions,” which hints that this isn’t being handed off wholesale. With no director or cast out there, the substance can’t be judged yet, but this carries different weight than the 2023 announcement. I think there’s a real chance of a follow-up right after Edgerunners 2 drops.
If they’re shooting Night City for real, the first thing I’ll judge is how they render the color of the night.
