The fall 2026 anime season brings 97 shows rolling out from October onward. The headliners are three big game-adjacent productions — Suikoden, Magic Knight Rayearth, and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 — alongside sequels people have been waiting on: The Apothecary Diaries Season 3, Tokyo Revengers: Three Heavens War Arc, and Black Clover 2nd Season. Nearly all of it premieres in the first week of October, which makes right now the moment to start picking.
Ninety-seven shows. Nobody is watching all of that. So this article narrows it to 14 you shouldn’t miss, sorted along three axes: game-derived, brand-new, and sequels. Premiere dates and source material are laid out in tables you can hand straight to your recording setup.
The broader sequel glut got its own article (the third-season pileup roundup), so this one aims at both ends of the spectrum: shows a newcomer can walk into cold, and shows the existing fans have been counting down to.
Start with the three that define the season.
Which fall 2026 game-derived anime matter most? Suikoden, Rayearth, and Edgerunners 2
Game-derived series are unusually strong this season, anchored by three: Suikoden (October 3), Magic Knight Rayearth (October 7 — a CLAMP manga at its root, though it’s just as known for its RPG adaptations), and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 (October 20, Netflix). All three carry enough name recognition that you can come in without any anime background.
| Title | Premiere | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Suikoden | Sat., October 3, TOKYO MX and others | KONAMI’s classic RPG gets its first TV anime. The question is how you compress an ensemble of 108 |
| Magic Knight Rayearth | Wed., October 7, 11:45 p.m. | An all-new anime from the CLAMP original. Theme songs by Toaki and Kawaguchi Yurina |
| Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 | Tue., October 20, Netflix exclusive | The TRIGGER × CD PROJEKT RED sequel, with four new cast members |
Suikoden is finally getting an anime 30 years after the 1995 PS1 original. A cast of 108 recruitable allies is not an anime-friendly premise, but the advance stills from episode 1 show protagonist Riou and his best friend Jowy on the night before they head home — a sign the adaptation is narrowing in on the early game’s “story of two boys.” This series never came to the Dreamcast or the Saturn, and now it’s finally moving. For my generation, that lands.
Which brand-new fall 2026 anime are easiest to start with?
If you aren’t following any sequels and want to start fresh this season, the five first-time adaptations are your targets. No prior knowledge required; the story begins in episode 1.
| Title | Premiere | Source / genre |
|---|---|---|
| Togen Anki: Nikko Kegon Falls Arc | Fri., October 2 | Manga / bloodline battles between oni and Momotaro descendants |
| Psyren | Mon., October 5 | Manga / a Shonen Jump psychic survival series, adapted 15 years after its run ended |
| Hotaru no Yomeiri | Fri., October 9 | Manga / Taisho-era romance crossed with engagement suspense |
| Kashita Maryoku wa Ribobarai de Kyosei Choshu | Sat., October 3, TV Asahi | Manga / a curveball on the banishment fantasy formula |
| The Seven Knights of Marronnier Kingdom | Sat., October 3, NHK Educational TV | Manga / fantasy produced by J.C.STAFF |
Psyren is Toshiaki Iwashiro’s series, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2008 to 2010. It ended in a way that read like a cancellation, and the “I wanted more of that” chorus never really faded — which makes an adaptation arriving now maybe the season’s single biggest surprise. A second trailer is already out, and the production details are covered in a separate article.
Which sequels have fans waiting? From Apothecary Diaries Season 3 to Black Clover
There are a lot of sequels this season. Here are the six with the longest waits behind them, in premiere order.
| Title | Premiere | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 | Fri., October 2, 11:00 p.m., Nippon TV network | The season’s most anticipated show. A film is also on deck |
| Tokyo Revengers: Three Heavens War Arc | Fri., October 2, MBS / Disney+ | The arc heading into the manga’s final chapter |
| Black Clover 2nd Season | Sat., October 3 | The first TV series in five years, since season 1 wrapped in 2021 |
| Ranma½ Season 3 | Sat., October 3 | The third season of the MAPPA version |
| Blue Box Season 2 | Sun., October 4, TBS network | Jump’s sports-and-romance coming-of-age story |
| Dragon Ball Super: Beerus | Sun., October 11, 11:15 p.m. | A new Dragon Ball Super series |
With sequels, the real problem is how much homework you need. For Apothecary Diaries and Blue Box, streaming the previous seasons is enough. Black Clover is a different story: season 1 ran 170 episodes. Honestly, jumping into the manga at the relevant volume is faster than watching all of it.
One thing to flag. The season’s highlights are crammed into three days, October 2 through 4, and recordings will collide. Saturday the 3rd alone has Suikoden, Black Clover, Ranma, and Kashita Maryoku all on the same day — you’ll want streaming as a backstop.
Fall 2026 anime premiere calendar: 14 picks, sorted by day

Summary: build your fall 2026 season around three game adaptations and six sequels
Fall 2026 has 97 anime in total. The game-derived trio anchors it — Suikoden (October 3), Magic Knight Rayearth (October 7), and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 (October 20) — while on the sequel side The Apothecary Diaries Season 3 (October 2) and Black Clover 2nd Season (October 3) are the picks. Newcomers have an easier entry through the five first-time adaptations, including Psyren and Togen Anki. The highlights bunch up between October 2 and 4, so lean on streaming to keep from missing anything.
What defines this season is that game adaptations are carrying it. Suikoden and Edgerunners 2 have the pull to bring in gamers, not just anime fans. There are too many sequels to keep up with, so the realistic strategy is narrowing to Apothecary Diaries and Black Clover and catching the rest on streaming later.
If you can’t decide, start with Suikoden’s first episode on October 3. Whether you waited 30 years or arrived yesterday, you’re at the same starting line.
