EAT-MAN The Over Order has officially been announced as an anime. A second teaser visual went up at New York Comic Con 2026 on October 8 local time, and with it came confirmation that Studio CAB is handling production.
EAT-MAN is a manga by Akihito Yoshitomi starring Bolt Crank, “the world’s greatest mercenary,” who can eat anything at all, screws and bolts included, and then pull whatever he swallowed back out of his right hand. The series built a stubbornly loyal following on the back of two things: an episodic structure in which a near-silent lead takes jobs across the world and quietly gets them done, and a dry, hard-boiled atmosphere. The new anime carries the subtitle The Over Order.
Having original creator Akihito Yoshitomi write the scripts and supply the original character designs himself signals a serious commitment to staying faithful to the manga. Shunji Oga is directing, with Satoshi Hirayama on character design. It’s the first screen adaptation in roughly 30 years, since the anime series that aired in 1997 and 1998.
What is EAT-MAN? The manga and its previous anime adaptations
EAT-MAN ran in Monthly Dengeki Comic Gao! starting in 1996. It’s set in a world where civilization has already collapsed once, and lead character Bolt Crank is a mercenary who roams from place to place taking jobs. Eat a gun and a gun comes out of his right hand; eat a key and a key comes out. The flavor of the series lies in how matter-of-factly he uses that power, never showily.
| Title | Period / format | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| EAT-MAN (original manga) | 1996–2002, Monthly Dengeki Comic Gao! | 19 volumes. Akihito Yoshitomi’s signature work |
| EAT-MAN (anime season 1) | 1997, TV anime, 12 episodes | Produced by Studio Deen. A strongly original take that diverged from the manga |
| EAT-MAN’98 (anime season 2) | 1998, TV anime, 12 episodes | Adapted episodes closer to the manga than season 1 did |
| EAT-MAN THE MAIN DISH (manga sequel) | 2014–, Monthly Shonen Sirius | Sequel by Akihito Yoshitomi, following Bolt on a new journey |
| EAT-MAN The Over Order (new anime) | Air date TBA, Studio CAB | Original creator on scripts and original designs |
The two older anime series are remembered for direction that was unusually quiet and stylish for the era, but season 1 strayed a long way from the manga, and the original fanbase was split on it. This time the creator himself is in the writers’ chair, so the starting conditions are already different.
Studio CAB plus a creator-written script: what changes this time
The biggest point here is that Akihito Yoshitomi is pulling double duty on scripts and original designs. The manga stacks up self-contained jobs while slowly peeling back the truth about Bolt and how this world came to be. Which jobs get picked and what order they run in changes the impression the whole thing leaves, so handing the creator control over that structure matters a great deal.
With Shunji Oga directing and Satoshi Hirayama on character design, the thing to watch is how Yoshitomi’s sharp linework gets translated into the texture of a modern anime. Whether the subtitle The Over Order points to a specific run of manga episodes or an all-new story has not been revealed as of October 2026.
This is the second teaser visual, continuing a steady drip of information from the first. The fact that it was unveiled at an overseas event like NYCC suggests the rollout has international streaming in mind.
When does it air or stream?
As of October 2026, no broadcast or streaming window has been announced. The cast hasn’t been revealed either. More information on the EAT-MAN The Over Order anime is expected to roll out in stages, so as a fan of the manga, all you can do is wait for the next update.
It’s a manga from the late 1990s, but that world hasn’t aged a day. Even for a guy like me who spent the Dreamcast years tearing through Shonen Jump titles, the way Bolt Crank carries himself still looks cool today.
EAT-MAN The Over Order FAQ
Do I need to have seen the older anime?
No. The new series has a different production and a different team, and the original creator is writing it. If anything, reading the manga will get you up to speed on Bolt’s power and the setting faster.
Which part of the manga does it adapt?
Unannounced. What part of the manga the subtitle The Over Order corresponds to is still waiting on future announcements.
Can I still read the manga?
EAT-MAN is available in full digitally. The sequel, EAT-MAN THE MAIN DISH, is there too, so there’s no trouble doing your homework before the anime arrives.

Bottom line: EAT-MAN returns after about 30 years, written by its creator
EAT-MAN The Over Order is produced by Studio CAB, directed by Shunji Oga, with character design by Satoshi Hirayama, and original creator Akihito Yoshitomi doubling up on scripts and original designs. It’s the first adaptation in roughly 30 years, and the air date and cast are still unannounced. With the creator holding the reins on structure, the “distance from the manga” problem that divided fans of the older series should be settled, so for now, bring on the next update.
