“Without NINKŪ, NARUTO would not exist.” That’s Masashi Kishimoto, flatly, about the series he grew up on — and now the day has actually arrived where those two worlds touch. The project is NARUTO × NINKŪ, a crossover anime unveiled at New York Comic Con 2026.
Here’s the bottom line. It’s in production right now as an all-new, four-episode anime, and both original creators — Masashi Kishimoto and Koji Kiriyama — are supervising every episode. The setup: the kid-era Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura stumble into another world and meet a frog-faced boy named Fusuke. As of October 2026, no air date and no streaming platform have been announced.
On the same stage, Bandai also kicked off PROJECT RASENGAN, a large-scale initiative mapping out the medium-to-long-term future of NARUTO and BORUTO. A NARUTO card game launching worldwide simultaneously in June 2027, a global rollout for the mobile game Hokage Ninja MOBILE, and a brand-new Kishimoto-penned manga called NARUTO: SHADOW RISING. The information density here is frankly absurd.
A nearly 30-year-old anime, crossing over with one of the biggest hits on the planet. As a thank-you note to the thing you were paying homage to, I’m struggling to think of a real precedent. So let’s sort out what’s locked in and what isn’t.
What is the NARUTO and NINKŪ crossover anime? It’s an all-new four-episode production
NARUTO × NINKŪ is a completely original anime in which NARUTO and NINKŪ cross over, and it’s being produced as a four-episode series.
The reveal came on October 10, 2026 (local time) at “NARUTO: What’s Next?”, a special stage at New York Comic Con 2026 in New York City. On hand were Junko Takeuchi (the voice of Naruto Uzumaki), Noriaki Sugiyama (Sasuke Uchiha) and Yoshihiko Tominaga, executive producer at PIERROT FILMS, the studio arm that has handled the anime series for years. In front of roughly 3,000 attendees, a teaser trailer and the crossover key visual got their worldwide debut.
The creative team has been announced too. Noriyuki Abe, who directed both the NINKŪ TV anime and BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS, is on board, as is Tetsuya Nishio, who served as character designer and chief animation director on the NINKŪ TV anime and the NARUTO series. Work-in-progress key animation from Nishio was shown off at the panel.
The people who actually built both shows are standing at the intersection of both shows. This isn’t a name lent out for fan-service purposes — this is the lineup that makes those drawings move the way they used to. That’s the part that really lands.
Why did Masashi Kishimoto want a NINKŪ crossover?
Kishimoto wanted to see the “continuation” of NINKŪ, and that desire is literally the starting point of the whole project.
I drew NARUTO because I wanted to see the continuation of NINKŪ. (…) In other words, Fusuke is Naruto’s hidden master. And at some point I started dreaming about putting that master-and-student pairing in an actual story, instead of leaving it in the shadows.

It’s rare for a manga author to go this far in an official comment. He’s past “I was influenced by it” and straight into “it would not exist.” Kiriyama chipped in with a comment of his own, crediting Kishimoto’s proposal and generosity for making this “miracle” happen.
Rica Matsumoto, who voices Fusuke, spoke about reuniting with the original cast of a TV anime that started roughly 30 years ago, saying she’s glad she stuck with this industry for so long. Takeuchi called the sight of kid-era Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura heading out on a mission together again “the absolute peak of emotion.” …Announcements like this one hit differently once you’ve got some years on you.
What’s the story? Team 7 gets lost in another world
In the published introduction, Team 7’s Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura are handed a mission by Kakashi. Kakashi has other business to attend to, so Naruto is named acting squad leader in his place.
The three of them set out full of swagger — and then get lost in another world along the way. Appearing before the bewildered trio is a frog-faced boy named Fusuke. What trials await them in this other world? That’s where the hook cuts off.
Picking the era when Sasuke still stands with them is a smart choice. Takeuchi herself put it as “Sasuke is on our side. Think about how precious that window is” — and if you followed the manga, you know exactly how much weight that one line carries.
What does PROJECT RASENGAN actually set in motion? Breaking down the announcements
PROJECT RASENGAN is a large-scale global initiative spanning manga, anime, cards and games that lays out NARUTO’s medium-to-long-term plans. The stage show debuted a key visual, a trailer and a roadmap of what’s coming.
| Announcement | Details | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| NARUTO × NINKŪ | All-new anime, four episodes. Masashi Kishimoto and Koji Kiriyama supervise every episode | Unannounced |
| NARUTO: SHADOW RISING | New manga drawn by Masashi Kishimoto | Unannounced |
| NARUTO Card Game | Handled by BANDAI CARD GAMES. Simultaneous worldwide release | June 2027 |
| Card game preview events | Rolling out in stages. Demo decks also planned for worldwide distribution | From early 2027 |
| Hokage Ninja MOBILE | Competitive action game for smartphones. Worldwide release confirmed | Unannounced |
| Hollywood live-action movie | A message from director Destin Daniel Cretton was delivered | Unannounced |
The card game is a TCG where you pick a leader to anchor your battles, then build around them with the ninja who fight alongside that leader. Three starter decks themed on Naruto, Sasuke and Gaara have been announced, along with the first booster pack, “Enter, Naruto Uzumaki!” Early-release merchandise was detailed as well, including an Official Play Mat -Naruto vs. Sasuke- and Premium Card Collection vol.00 -Chakra Set-.
The roadmap still has a lot of blank slots marked unannounced. Which tells you this reveal wasn’t the fireworks finale — it’s the front door.
When does the crossover anime air? Has a streaming home been decided?
As of October 2026, neither an air window nor a streaming platform for NARUTO × NINKŪ has been announced.
What’s confirmed right now is this and only this: four episodes, both original creators supervising all of them, Noriyuki Abe and Tetsuya Nishio on the production, and the project currently in the works. It’s tempting to read something into the broadcast format from the copyright line listing Shueisha, TV Tokyo and Pierrot, but with no official word, I’m not going to call it here.
If you want to stay on top of it, parking yourself on the PROJECT RASENGAN special site is the surest bet. More news should land as those blank roadmap slots get filled in.

NARUTO × NINKŪ crossover anime: everything announced so far
To recap the essentials: NARUTO × NINKŪ is an all-new four-episode anime, with Masashi Kishimoto and Koji Kiriyama supervising every episode. It was announced on October 10, 2026 (local time) at New York Comic Con 2026. The air window and streaming platform are both unannounced.
Alongside it, PROJECT RASENGAN revealed the new manga NARUTO: SHADOW RISING, a simultaneous worldwide launch for the NARUTO Card Game in June 2027, and a global release for Hokage Ninja MOBILE. Plenty of slots on the roadmap are still blank.
The value of this crossover isn’t “big hit meets big hit” — it’s a thank-you note to the work that inspired it. The famous story about Kishimoto drawing NARUTO because he wanted to see NINKŪ continue has now been turned, by the man himself, into an actual continuation. On top of that, both creators are supervising and the art team is staffed by people who worked on both shows. There isn’t a single loose thread in the logic of this project.
Four episodes is short. But something like this shouldn’t be measured by length. Bring on the broadcast details.
