Yoshihiro Togashi has announced on his official X account that he will turn down all future work requests that come with a deadline and prioritize his own manuscript work instead. The requests he is currently handling will be the last ones he takes on with a deadline attached. If and when he resumes work on his manuscripts, he says he will announce it in the same place.

The creator behind Yu Yu Hakusho, Level E and HUNTER×HUNTER prefaced the post by citing a combination of physical and mental health problems. The clearest sign of the mood around this announcement is that fans did not respond with disappointment so much as with “good, that’s how it should be” and “honestly, I wish he’d said it sooner.”

HUNTER×HUNTER returned after roughly a year and a half with Chapter 411 in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 31, which went on sale June 29, 2026, and ran for 10 straight chapters through Chapter 420 in issue 41, released Monday, September 7. The series is now on hiatus again, and no date has been given for Chapter 421 or anything after it.

What exactly did Yoshihiro Togashi announce?

Togashi posted on his official X account that the requests he is currently working on will be his last ones with deadlines, that he will decline all deadline-bound work going forward, and that he will prioritize work on his own manuscripts.

With physical and mental health problems piling up, I have decided that the requests I am currently handling will be my last, and that from here on I will decline all work requests that come with a deadline and prioritize work on my own manuscripts. When manuscript work resumes, I will announce it here again.

The part you can’t afford to skim past is that nowhere in it does he say he is quitting manga. What he is declining is “work requests that come with a deadline,” and what he explicitly says he will prioritize is “work on my own manuscripts.” In other words, this is housekeeping aimed at getting back to the drawing board, not a retirement notice.

And then there’s that line: “When manuscript work resumes, I will announce it here again.” He’s pointed to his official X account as the place where the news will land, so following it is basically the only option.

Where does HUNTER×HUNTER’s serialization stand right now?

HUNTER×HUNTER is currently on hiatus, and no date has been given for Chapter 421 or later. Its most recent run went from issue 31, released June 29, 2026, through issue 41, released Monday, September 7 — 10 consecutive chapters, from Chapter 411 to Chapter 420.

Timing What happened
Released June 29, 2026 (issue 31) Chapter 411 runs after roughly a year and a half away
Through the September 7, 2026 release (issue 41) 10 consecutive chapters, up through Chapter 420
As of October 2026 On hiatus again. No date given for Chapter 421 or later

Ten chapters in a row is a genuinely long stretch by recent HUNTER×HUNTER standards. Given that this announcement arrived immediately afterward, the natural reading is that getting those 10 chapters out cost him a great deal.

How did fans react?

The reaction wasn’t criticism. It was “good, that’s how it should be,” from essentially every direction. What stands out this time is how much of it was aimed at the industry rather than at him.

  • “Wasn’t it every single person on the planet’s wish that Togashi get to focus on nothing but his manuscripts?!”
  • “To everyone in the industry: please stop setting deadlines for Togashi on anything other than manga. Thank you in advance.”
  • “Manga is more than enough for us. Thank you so much for drawing Hunter x Hunter.”
  • “I want it made illegal to ask Togashi to work on anything except HUNTER×HUNTER manuscripts.”
  • “Fans are perfectly happy just getting HUNTER×HUNTER at all…”
  • “Togashi, please take care of yourself.”

“Made illegal” is half a joke, but everyone’s pointing the same direction with it: let this man spend his time on the manuscripts and nothing else.

That said, speaking honestly as a reader, there’s some unease here too. The decision to decline work with deadlines means, flipped around, that the deadlines themselves had become a burden — and with health issues stated up front, it would be a mistake to read this with nothing but optimism. Between that and the fact that no return date has been given, those of us waiting can only wait. …I stopped counting how many years I’ve been waiting since this Dreamcast-era guy caught up with the serialization.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s announcement: the key points

Yoshihiro Togashi announced on his official X account that, citing a combination of physical and mental health problems, the requests he is currently handling will be his last, and that going forward he will decline all work requests that come with a deadline in order to prioritize work on his own manuscripts. He says that when manuscript work resumes, he will announce it again on his official X account.

HUNTER×HUNTER restarted with Chapter 411 in issue 31, released June 29, 2026, and ran for 10 consecutive chapters through Chapter 420 in issue 41, released September 7. It is now on hiatus again, and no date has been given for Chapter 421 or later. His best-known works are Yu Yu Hakusho, Level E and HUNTER×HUNTER.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

This isn’t a retirement announcement, it’s a priority announcement. He limited what he’s declining to “work requests that come with a deadline,” and he spelled out what he’s prioritizing as “work on my own manuscripts.” Read the statement plainly and the fair interpretation is that he’s clearing space to get back to the drawing board. The near-unanimous fan response of “the manga is all we need” looks like the result of people reading it exactly the same way.

The return will be announced on his official X account. Don’t rush him — waiting for his health to come back around is the only thing any of us can do.
