The first Year 1 add-on character for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, Phoenix Cyclops, joins the roster on November 2, 2026 (Pacific time). In Japan that is expected to land on November 3. Two DLC costumes, Classic and Legacy, release the same day.

The Year 1 Character & Stage Pass is 3,980 yen (about US$26, converted at 153 yen to the dollar), tax included, and covers four characters including Phoenix Cyclops, plus an added stage and a set of results-screen poses. A price for buying characters individually had not been officially announced as of October 8, 2026.

This article covers what Phoenix Cyclops can do and how the Dark Phoenix transformation works, the price gap between the Year 1 pass and the Ultimate Edition, and the three-hour PS Plus trial and the sale that both started on October 7. The information here was cross-checked against the coverage on PlayStation.Blog and 4Gamer.

Chip away with Optic Blast, bank four Solar Shards, turn into Dark Phoenix. Even at the cost of your own health. That design is seriously sharp-edged.

Dates first.

When Does Phoenix Cyclops Join? November 2 Pacific Time, Likely November 3 in Japan

The release date is Monday, November 2, 2026, on Pacific time. PlayStation.Blog spells out the time zone, so in Japan the rollout is expected to fall somewhere between the early hours and the morning of November 3, and the exact Japan time has not been given yet. The DLC costumes Classic and Legacy arrive the same day.

Phoenix Cyclops is Cyclops carrying the Phoenix Force, a power on a cosmic scale. In the comics the look comes from the five characters who split the Phoenix Force in Avengers vs. X-Men, the group known as the Phoenix Five. As Famitsu reported in July, the version joining this game is based on that Phoenix Five incarnation.

The reason two costumes land at once has an official explanation as well. In response to the decision to make the base character the Phoenix version, there were requests to play as the familiar look fans have known for decades, and Classic and Legacy were put together to answer them. Anyone who wants to play in the blue-and-yellow X-Men uniform has been waiting for exactly this.

What Can Phoenix Cyclops Do? Four Solar Shards Turn Him Into Dark Phoenix

Phoenix Cyclops fights around a wide spread of Optic Blast attacks backed by the power of the Phoenix Force. Landing Optic Blasts banks Solar Shards, and collecting four of them lets him transform into Dark Phoenix. The transformation buys a burst of power in exchange for carrying the risk of spending his own health.

Element Details
Basic attacks Optic Blast (eye beams) and fire attacks
Banked resource Solar Shards (banked when Optic Blast is used)
Transformation requirement Four Solar Shards
After transforming Turns into Dark Phoenix, spending health in exchange for a burst of power

In a game fought with four-on-four tag teams, there is room to recover health by tagging out. So even when the Dark Phoenix transformation eats into health, dropping him to the bench and getting it back is a workable plan. My read is that the design is aiming at burst damage to drop an opponent, then a tag out. On the other side of it, shards do not bank unless the blasts keep landing, so there will be matches where close-range pressure keeps the transformation out of reach. Whether he is strong or just sharp-edged is something I want to judge after getting hands on him on November 3.

The trailer shows the Dark Phoenix transformation cracking his body open and exposing his face. In both mechanics and looks, he is built as a completely separate character from the normal Cyclops.

How Much Is the Year 1 Pass? 3,980 Yen, Compared Against the Ultimate Edition

The Year 1 Character & Stage Pass is 3,980 yen, tax included, and includes four add-on characters, one added stage, and a set of character poses for the results screen. The remaining content is scheduled to release by December 31, 2027. A price for individual purchases had not been officially announced as of October 8, 2026.

How to buy Price (tax included) Year 1 pass
Standard Edition + Year 1 pass 7,980 yen + 3,980 yen = 11,960 yen (about US$78) Included
Digital Deluxe Edition 10,480 yen (about US$69) Not included
Ultimate Edition 11,980 yen (about US$78) Included (plus five costumes and avatars)

Adding the Year 1 pass to the Standard Edition comes to 11,960 yen, and the Ultimate Edition is 11,980 yen. The gap is a mere 20 yen (roughly 13 cents), and Ultimate also brings five costumes including Spider-Man’s Advanced Suit 2.0, Howard the Duck as a lobby avatar, Cosmo as a lobby pet, and animated chromatic colors for all 20 characters. For anyone buying the game from here, Ultimate is the only call, and I will say that flat out.

Anyone who already owns the Standard Edition is down to two choices: buy the pass, or wait for individual sales. The individual price has not been announced, but going by the market rate, with Street Fighter 6’s Year 4 pass at 4,990 yen (about US$33) and this game’s pass at 3,980 yen, four characters bundled together is likely to come out cheaper than buying them one at a time. That is speculation, though, and who the remaining three characters are has not been announced either. Whether a character you actually care about is in there changes the call.

What About the PS Plus Trial and the Sale? Three Hours of Play Starting October 7

A game trial for PlayStation Plus members started on October 7, 2026, giving up to three hours with the main game. A sale is also running on the PlayStation Store from that same October 7. On top of that, the game will be playable at EVO France from October 9 to 11.

Three hours is plenty of runway for a fighting-game introduction. Get a feel for the four-on-four tag and assist controls and the one-button combo system, then decide whether to buy the game and the pass. Discount rates on the sale shift depending on the period, so check the listing on the store. Dropping a sale and a trial two months after the August 7 launch is surely aimed at growing the player base ahead of the DLC character’s arrival.

The game released on August 7, 2026 for PS5 and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store). Arc System Works developed it and Sony Interactive Entertainment published it. It is a competitive fighter in which 20 Marvel heroes form four-on-four teams, and the Knights of Doom led by Doctor Doom drew most of the attention before launch.

Summary: Joining November 2, a 3,980 Yen Year 1 Pass, and Ultimate Effectively Costs 20 Yen More

Phoenix Cyclops joins MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls as the first Year 1 character on November 2, 2026 (Pacific time, expected to be November 3 in Japan). Banking four Solar Shards with Optic Blast transforms him into Dark Phoenix, trading health for a burst of power. The two costumes Classic and Legacy release the same day. The Year 1 pass is 3,980 yen and carries four characters and one stage, with the rest scheduled to release by December 31, 2027. The individual price had not been announced as of October 8. If you have not bought the game yet, the Ultimate Edition at 11,980 yen, only 20 yen above the Standard Edition plus the pass, is the better buy. The three-hour PS Plus trial is live from October 7.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

A design that spends health to become Dark Phoenix is a risk-reward trade that only works because of the tag system, and it is sharp-edged in the way Arc System Works tends to be. The buying conclusion is clean: Ultimate if you do not own the game, the 3,980 yen pass if you do. Right now there is not much reason to wait for individual sales.

Agonizing over a 20 yen gap is a waste of your time.
