Risk of Rain 2’s new DLC, Hallowed Concepts, shadow-dropped on October 9, 2026. The expansion itself had been announced back on April 10, 2026 during The Triple-i Initiative, but it shipped with no advance notice of a release date — it simply went live.
It’s available on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pricing can be checked on each storefront as of this writing on October 9, 2026.
Risk of Rain 2 is the roguelike TPS developed by Hopoo Games and now published by Gearbox Publishing, built around 110-plus items, 11 playable characters and co-op for up to four players, with a long tail of DLC expansions behind it. Below: what’s in the new DLC, and what the history of the previous expansions says about whether you should buy in today.
What’s new in Hallowed Concepts — pushing deeper into N’Kuhana’s world
The theme of this DLC is a descent into N’Kuhana’s dark, cult-tinged world. The official framing is that Survivors “step even deeper into N’Kuhana’s dark and cultish world.” An eerie new region is added to Petrichor V, and a new stage takes you out into N’Kuhana’s dark world proper.
| Category | New content |
|---|---|
| Stages | An excursion into N’Kuhana’s dark world, plus an eerie new region of Petrichor V |
| Systems | Spell-casting mechanics, curse system |
| Collectibles | Collecting pages of the N’TORMAT |
| Enemies | New enemy types, a new boss entity |
Until now, N’Kuhana has existed mostly as a name dropped in item descriptions and log fragments. In-game context frames the entity as something bound up with faith and healing, which makes walking directly into that world the payoff lore-watchers have been waiting for. The two new systems — spell-casting and curses — look to me like a way to bolt a risk-for-damage decision onto a game whose builds have always been about stacking items.
Risk of Rain 2’s DLC history — the third major expansion
Risk of Rain 2 entered early access in March 2019 and hit 1.0 in August 2020. Major DLC has arrived at a steady clip since.
| DLC | Released | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Survivors of the Void | March 1, 2022 | Developed by Hopoo Games. Two new Survivors, Void items, new stages |
| Seekers of the Storm | August 27, 2024 | The first DLC under Gearbox. New Survivors, new bosses. Marred by bugs at launch |
| Hallowed Concepts | October 9, 2026 | N’Kuhana’s world, spell-casting and curse systems, new stages and bosses |
The Risk of Rain IP transferred from Hopoo Games to Gearbox in November 2022. Seekers of the Storm, the first expansion under that arrangement, drew a wave of reports about performance regressions and altered behavior on existing items right after launch, and the fixes took a while to land. If this surprise release is Gearbox applying that lesson and only shipping once the build was actually ready, that’s a decision worth applauding.
What to know before buying — for returning players and newcomers
For existing players, the draw is the new N’Kuhana stage and the curse system. Given what happened with Seekers of the Storm, though, there’s no harm in checking community bug reports on day one before you pay. Base-game updates can shift the balance too, so if you have a favorite build, read the patch notes.
If you’re new, the base game on its own is still plenty. All 110-plus items and all 11 characters live in the base game, and “after I’ve exhausted the base game” is a perfectly reasonable time to buy DLC. Grabbing the base game and the expansions together during a sale is the practical move.
If the reason the Triple-i Initiative reveal never came with a date was that they were saving it for a drop like this, that’s a pretty slick bit of showmanship. Playing on Steam Deck late at night and suddenly going “wait, there’s new stuff” is genuinely my favorite feeling in this hobby.
Hallowed Concepts FAQ
Is there a Switch, PS4 or Xbox One version?
The announced platforms are PC (Steam and Epic), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There’s been no word on last-generation consoles or Switch as of October 2026.
Do I need the earlier DLC to play it?
You can buy and play it with just the base game. Survivors of the Void and Seekers of the Storm are sold separately and aren’t required.
What happens in co-op if a player doesn’t own the DLC?
No official explanation of how this works has been confirmed as of October 2026. With previous DLC, players could enter DLC stages as long as the host owned the expansion, so the same is likely true here, but check the official guidance.
