Ratatan, the rhythm-roguelite action game from Patapon creator Hiroyuki Kotani, launched worldwide in its full release form at 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026. It is available on PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the Steam version at 4,950 yen (about US$32), the console digital edition at 6,160 yen (about US$40), and the physical edition and digital deluxe edition at 7,018 yen (about US$46), all tax included. Dollar figures are converted at 153 yen to US$1 and are for reference only.

The game entered Steam Early Access on September 19, 2025, and cleared 100,000 copies sold within a month. The full release, originally set for July 16, was pushed back to October 15 over online stability, which lined it up with the console versions.

This article breaks down pricing by platform, what the game actually plays like as you command your Cobun with rhythm commands, how the roguelite elements are structured, and the road from Early Access to the full release.

Let us start with the prices by platform. Steam and consoles are not the same.

How much does Ratatan cost? Steam versus console pricing

The Steam version is 4,950 yen (about US$32), tax included. On consoles, according to Game Source Entertainment’s announcement, the standard digital edition is 6,160 yen (about US$40), while the digital deluxe edition and the physical edition both come in at 7,018 yen (about US$46), tax included. The Steam version cost 2,800 yen (about US$18) during Early Access, so the full release is a 2,150 yen (about US$14) jump.

Platform & Edition Price (tax included)
Steam 4,950 yen (about US$32)
Switch 2 / PS5 / Xbox standard digital edition 6,160 yen (about US$40)
Switch 2 / PS5 / Xbox digital deluxe edition 7,018 yen (about US$46)
Switch 2 / PS5 physical edition 7,018 yen (about US$46)

That leaves a 1,210 yen (about US$8) gap between Steam and consoles. The game supports 10 languages including Japanese, and Japanese is covered for both voice and subtitles. Physical copies come with retailer-specific bonuses such as postcards and acrylic keychains, and some stores are attaching DLC as a preorder bonus.

Anyone who bought in at 2,800 yen during Early Access rolls straight over to the full version. If you are buying now, Steam’s 4,950 yen is the cheapest way in.

What kind of game is Ratatan? Commanding your Cobun with rhythm commands

Ratatan is a rhythm game welded onto a side-scrolling action game. You control a commander known as a Ratatan and, by entering rhythm commands that string three buttons across three or four beats in time with the music, you order your soldiers, the Cobun, to advance, jump, attack, defend, or unleash a special.

According to 4Gamer, there are eight Ratatan, each with a different passive effect and Super Fever move. One is tough on defense, one is fast, one is good at healing, and the Ratatan you pick changes how your Cobun perform. Each Cobun has its own HP, fights with one of eight weapon types including swords, spears, and bombs, and learns up to two skills per weapon family.

Element Details
Ratatan Eight of them. Passive effect and Super Fever move unique to each
Cobun Individual HP, eight weapon families, up to two skills per family
Rhythm commands Three buttons entered across three or four beats. Perfect timing restores more MP
Command types Formation, jump, attack, defend, special
Players One to four, online co-op

Patapon’s “Pata-Pon” has become “Rata-Tan,” and the soldiers are now Cobun. The difference is that the Ratatan itself runs around on screen and has moves of its own. Because perfect inputs restore more MP, how well you ride the rhythm feeds straight back into your damage.

How do the roguelite elements work? Ratacarta and base upgrades

The game is built around repeating attempts called runs, and during a run you pick Ratacarta cards at random to raise your abilities. Effects are tied to attributes, and the dual-attribute Duo Ratacarta hit harder. Between runs you strengthen your Cobun’s gear back at base and unlock abilities to prepare for the next attempt.

A major update in October 2025, during Early Access, added Super Fever moves, accessory slots for Cobun, random events mid-run, and a reroll function for Ratacarta. The full release arrives with all of that already in place.

Roguelites and rhythm games actually get along fine. Even a run that falls apart still feels good as long as you are locked into the beat. In four-player co-op, chaining Super Fever moves together is the core design concept, and the assumption is that you learn the game solo before dragging your friends in.

From crowdfunding to the full release, and the reason for the delay

4Gamer reports that Ratatan’s 2023 crowdfunding campaign blew well past its 20 million yen (about US$131,000) goal within 48 hours of opening, ultimately gathering roughly 219 million yen (about US$1.43 million). Ratata Arts handles development, and Game Source Entertainment is the publisher in Japan.

Steam Early Access began on September 19, 2025, crossed 100,000 copies sold on October 24 of that year, and has held a Very Positive rating on Steam. The full release was originally planned for July 16, 2026, but was pushed to October 15 for final tuning aimed at delivering a more stable product.

Date Event
2023 Raises roughly 219 million yen (about US$1.43 million) through crowdfunding
September 19, 2025 Steam Early Access begins (2,800 yen, about US$18)
October 24, 2025 Passes 100,000 copies sold
June 2026 Full release pushed from July 16 to October 15
October 15, 2026 Full release goes live worldwide, with Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox versions launching too

On the official X account, the team was candid about what was going on behind the delay: juggling Version 1.0 development with support for multiple platforms left no hands free for Early Access updates. Finishing four platforms and 10 languages with a team of 15 to 20 people was also the subject of a CEDEC 2026 talk.

Final Thoughts: Ratatan’s full release pricing and platforms

The full release of Ratatan went live worldwide at 12:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026. It is available on PC (Steam), Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with the Steam version at 4,950 yen, the standard console digital edition at 6,160 yen, and the digital deluxe and physical editions at 7,018 yen, all tax included. Eight Ratatan use rhythm commands to direct Cobun armed with eight weapon types, the roguelite structure is built on Ratacarta upgrades, and the game supports online co-op for up to four players.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

Patapon’s spiritual successor is back, rewritten in the grammar of the moment: roguelite. The Steam version’s 4,950 yen is 1,210 yen cheaper than consoles, and Japanese voice acting is in there too. 100,000 copies in Early Access, a Very Positive rating. Choosing a delay and taking the quality instead should pay off in how stable the full release feels.

Rata, tan, tan. Get four people in sync and that alone becomes a song.
