Frostrail, a co-op survival FPS, is putting a demo on Steam for one week only, from October 19 to October 26, 2026. It runs during Steam Next Fest and covers three areas to explore, operating the steam train, scavenging and crafting, and fighting creatures.

It’s developed by FakeFish, the studio behind Barotrauma, and published by Shiro Unlimited. It supports one to four players in co-op, and the full version is planned to enter early access in the fourth quarter of 2026. No price has been given, and the Steam page’s language list does not include Japanese.

This article covers how long the demo runs and what’s in it, the system that turns a steam locomotive into a mobile fortress, the early access plan, and how this differs from the similarly named Frostpunk. The information here was cross-checked against GameSpark, AUTOMATON and the Steam store page.

Deep cold, a train, monsters, four players. This is nothing like Frostpunk’s city building — it’s a game about grabbing a gun, getting off, picking things up and running back.

Let’s start with the demo.

How long is the Frostrail demo up? October 19 to 26, one week only during Steam Next Fest

The demo is available for one week, from October 19 to October 26, 2026 — a limited-time release timed to Steam Next Fest. What you can play covers three areas to explore, operating the steam locomotive, scavenging and crafting, and fighting creatures, either solo or in co-op with up to four players.

The blurb on the Steam page captures this game’s temperature well.

Through the frost, death follows the tracks. Dive into a ruthless survival FPS, solo or co-op. Explore, scavenge, craft and fight to endure a frozen, corrupted world. Operate and upgrade your steam-powered train through an unforgiving wasteland, where every choice is a matter of survival.

“Death follows the tracks” is the structure of this game stated outright. Your base never stops moving, and whatever is out there moves along the same line you do.

Since it’s only up for a week, block out time for it alongside the other Steam Next Fest demos. A playtest ran back in April 2026, so this demo is the first public look at how far the game has come since then.

What kind of game is Frostrail? Turn a steam locomotive into a mobile fortress and cross a frozen empire

Frostrail is a co-op survival FPS in which you cross an ice-covered empire by steam locomotive, step off to explore ruins, and haul supplies back to upgrade the train. The train works as a mobile fortress: you manage fuel, maintain weapon manufacturing equipment, upgrade the armor and the engine, and add new cars.

The setting is an empire that once prospered and then rotted away in the deep cold because of what its emperor did. Abandoned settlements, bunkers and fortresses are scattered along the tracks, and you get off there to collect resources. Monsters stalk you, and the cold eats away at your body. You craft weapons and gear from what you bring back, then push on to the next stretch of line. That loop is the core of it.

  • Driving the train and managing its fuel (stop and you freeze)
  • Getting off at ruins along the tracks to explore and scavenge
  • Crafting weapons and gear, and upgrading the train’s armor and engine
  • Adding cars to expand what the train can hold
  • Fighting creatures and coping with the freezing environment

Developer FakeFish is the studio that made Barotrauma, where a crew works together to face horror inside a submarine. Barotrauma has over 50,000 Steam reviews at 94% positive, and while the genre shifts from a 2D side-scroller to a first-person shooter, it reads like the same spine: get through an extreme situation with your friends inside a sealed vehicle. The submarine became a locomotive, and the sea became ice.

When does Frostrail come out? Early access is planned for Q4 2026, with no Japanese support

The full version is planned to enter early access on Steam in the fourth quarter of 2026, and the early access period is expected to run about a year from release. As of October 8, 2026, there has been no official announcement of a price. The Steam page lists English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese; Japanese is not among them.

The plan is for the core gameplay to be in place when early access opens, with content additions, bug fixes and balance work continuing through to the full release. System requirements, both minimum and recommended, are listed as TBA, which gives the demo a second purpose: finding out whether the thing runs on your PC.

The sticking point is the lack of Japanese support. A survival FPS is rough going when you can’t read the UI or the item descriptions. Looking at that 500,000-wishlist figure, I think there’s a chance additional languages including Japanese get considered during early access, but that’s my guess — there has been no official announcement. Whether it’s playable in English is something the demo will answer for you.

What’s the difference between Frostrail and Frostpunk? Different perspective, different genre

Frostrail and Frostpunk share a similar name and a frozen setting, and nothing else — the genre and the perspective are completely different. Frostpunk is a top-down city management sim; Frostrail is a first-person survival FPS.

Item Frostrail Frostpunk
Genre Co-op survival FPS City management survival
Perspective First person Top down
Base A moving steam locomotive A fixed generator
Players 1 to 4 Single player
Developer FakeFish (Finland) 11 bit studios (Poland)
Japanese Not supported (as of October 8) Supported

The one thing they share is the tension of cold itself being the enemy, and dying the moment your heat source goes out. Frostpunk’s appeal is the weight of binding people with your city’s laws; Frostrail’s appeal is the speed of running a train with your friends while fleeing monsters. Loving Frostpunk does not mean Frostrail will land for you. The reverse holds too: if you find city building boring but love a freezing world, Frostrail is the one that’ll hit.

Summary: the demo runs October 19 to 26, early access arrives in 2026, and Japanese isn’t supported

The Frostrail demo runs from October 19 to 26, 2026, one week only during Steam Next Fest. Three areas to explore, operating the steam locomotive, scavenging and crafting, and combat, playable with one to four players. It’s developed by Barotrauma studio FakeFish and published by Shiro Unlimited, and the full version is planned to enter early access in the fourth quarter of 2026 and spend about a year before the full release. No price has been given, Japanese isn’t supported, and the system requirements haven’t been announced either. All it shares with Frostpunk is the name and the cold — one is a first-person shooter, the other a top-down city manager, and they’re separate genres.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

My read is that this transplants the joy of Barotrauma — panicking with your friends inside a cramped vehicle — into an FPS and onto a train. 500,000 wishlists is proof of how big the expectations are, and the demo is where we find out if they’re justified. The lack of Japanese support is the only wall, and even so, a one-week window is worth showing up for.

Stop the train and it freezes. October 19, four of us are getting on board.
