Makai Toshi CHI-BA, an indie RPG built out of Chiba Prefecture’s place names and folklore, arrives on Steam on Monday, November 2, 2026. The price is 600 yen (about US$4, tax included). Dollar figures are converted at 153 yen to US$1 and are for reference only. Towns including Funabashi, Mobara and Kashiwa, plus an extra dungeon, are being added as new maps that the smartphone and BOOTH versions never had.

The entire game was developed by one person, Sadayuki Nagahori of Koyurugi Kobo. He spent 10 years on it while holding down a full-time job, as the Steam store page states outright. The premise: four high school juniors in Chiba are granted power by seven spirits and fight monsters in turn-based battles.

Hearing “local-flavor RPG” makes you picture something closer to a tourism pamphlet, but what sets this one apart is that it plants Chiba’s history and folk tales at the foundation of the story. This article breaks down the release date and price, what the Steam version adds, how it differs from the smartphone release, and the story behind one developer spending a decade on it.

Let’s start with the numbers on the Steam version.

When does the Steam version of Makai Toshi CHI-BA launch, and how much is it?

The Steam version launches on Monday, November 2, 2026, priced at 600 yen (about US$4, tax included). The Steam store page lists November 1, but that is US time, which makes it the 2nd in Japan. It supports Japanese and English, and you can switch between them on the title screen.

Item Details
Release date Monday, November 2, 2026
Price 600 yen (about US$4, tax included)
Languages Japanese and English (switchable on the title screen)
Playtime Roughly 3 to 6 hours (the Steam version runs longer)
System requirements Windows 10/11 64-bit, 4GB RAM, 600MB free space
Developer & Publisher Koyurugi Kobo (Sadayuki Nagahori)

At 600 yen, this costs about as much as one lunch. The system requirements top out at an integrated GPU as old as Intel HD Graphics 4000, so no gaming PC required. My read is that it will run fine on a Steam Deck.

What are the Steam version’s new maps? Funabashi, Mobara, Kashiwa and an extra dungeon

Famitsu reports that the Steam version newly adds towns including Funabashi, Mobara and Kashiwa along with an extra dungeon. Where the smartphone version ran about 3 to 6 hours, the Steam version is bigger.

Funabashi, Mobara, Kashiwa. If you live in Chiba, every one of those is somewhere you pass through on your commute to school or a shopping trip. The game spells them in katakana instead of their usual kanji, presumably because the CHI-BA of the game is an otherworld that runs flush against the real Chiba. Using real place names while insisting that monsters and spirits live in them is a trick the katakana helps pull off.

What is inside the extra dungeon has not been officially announced as of October 2026. Whether it turns out to be high-difficulty postgame content or a side dungeon you enter from one of the new towns is something to find out after launch.

What kind of game is Makai Toshi CHI-BA? Chiba folklore and seven spirits

It is a modern-fantasy RPG set in Chiba Prefecture, where a group of four high school juniors receive power from seven spirits and fight mysterious monsters. The Steam store page explains that it is “grounded in real Chiba folk tales,” weaving in actual place names, references to local history, and regional legends.

Battles are turn-based and strategic, built around a resource called Material Points. The Steam tags include Conversation and Story Rich, which tells you this is an RPG that pulls you forward with narrative rather than combat. A 3-to-6-hour runtime feels less like a campaign and more like reading one story straight through on a weekend night.

Platform Launch Date Price
Android March 16, 2026 Free
iPhone March 27, 2026 200 yen (about US$1)
Windows (BOOTH) April 12, 2026 600 yen (about US$4)
Steam November 2, 2026 600 yen (about US$4), with new maps added

Because the Android version is free, you can sample the world before the Steam release even arrives. The new maps are Steam-exclusive, though, so if you want to walk around Funabashi or Kashiwa you will be waiting for November 2.

One developer, 10 years. Who is Koyurugi Kobo?

Koyurugi Kobo is Sadayuki Nagahori’s solo development label, and the Steam store page states that he “built it alone over 10 years while working full time.” The game was originally made for smartphones, and the Steam version brings upgraded visuals and an English localization.

The store page also spells out that AI assisted with some artwork and the English localization, while the core creative work was done by the developer himself. Volunteering where it was used and where it was not strikes me as an honest way for a solo developer to handle it.

An RPG that spent 10 years grappling with one specific place is about to go out worldwide for 600 yen. There is no shortage of hometown games, but very few build their story’s skeleton out of folk tales and render the local streets as a demon realm.

Final Thoughts: the Makai Toshi CHI-BA Steam release date and price

The Steam version of Makai Toshi CHI-BA launches on Monday, November 2, 2026, for 600 yen (tax included), with Japanese and English support. Towns including Funabashi, Mobara and Kashiwa plus an extra dungeon are added as new maps, pushing playtime past the original 3 to 6 hours. Sadayuki Nagahori of Koyurugi Kobo built the whole thing alone over 10 years, and it is already out ahead of Steam as a free Android release, a 200-yen iPhone version, and a 600-yen BOOTH version.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

A solo-developed RPG that takes Chiba folklore as its base and turns Funabashi and Kashiwa into a demon realm. Three to six hours for 600 yen is exactly the right length for a weekend night. The contents of the extra dungeon are still under wraps, but you can always check out the world through the free Android version while you wait for the Steam release.

November 2, 600 yen. If you live in Chiba, finding out whether your own town shows up is reason enough to buy it.
