The first story trailer for STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, an all-new game from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, went live on October 16, 2026. It covers the 1915 Kokura chapter, opening with protagonist Makoto Daito — a man who suffered persecution in America — sneaking aboard the ghost ship of the trader Orpheus to stow away back to Japan. The game launches on January 15, 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), and it arrives on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

The download Standard Edition costs 8,990 yen including tax (about US$59, converted at 153 yen to the dollar), the Deluxe Edition 11,990 yen (about US$78), the PS5 physical edition 9,900 yen (about US$65), and the Collector’s Edition with the vinyl record 18,000 yen (about US$118). Every edition comes with the same preorder bonus: an in-game dosu blade called Kagekiri.

This article breaks down what’s in the trailer, how the editions differ, the shape of a game that spans five eras, the cast and the music, and the parts that still give me pause. I covered the basic release date and pricing in an earlier article, so this time the weight falls on what the footage actually told us.

Let’s start with what the trailer actually shows.

What does the first story trailer show? The 1915 Kokura chapter

The first trailer is set in 1915, in Kokura, the first of the game’s five eras and five cities. Makoto Daito, persecuted in America, sneaks aboard the ghost ship commanded by the trader Orpheus and stows away for Japan. On board he meets Yu Mashiro, the man who becomes his partner for life. After a long voyage Daito steps ashore in Kokura, gets pushed and pulled by the people he meets there, and finds his opening into life as an impresario.

The footage alternates between jazz and rap, putting bare-knuckle brawls and onstage musical numbers at the same temperature. Some of the lines deliberately echo the lyrics of the Like a Dragon series, so the studio clearly isn’t hiding its pedigree. You can watch the trailer on the official site and on Sega’s official YouTube channel.

Where the story begins Persecution in America, stowing away on the ghost ship, arrival in Kokura

What caught my attention is that the story starts on the side of coming back to Japan rather than leaving it. A man who was on the receiving end of persecution becomes an impresario, and the game follows that over 50 years, from 1915 to 1965. There’s a different kind of weight here than anything in Like a Dragon’s Kamurocho.

When does it release? Platforms and pricing for every edition

The release date is January 15, 2027. It’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), and it’s on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Sega’s official press release lays out pricing as follows (all figures include tax).

Edition Price What’s included
Standard (download) 8,990 yen (about US$59) Base game
Physical edition (PS5) 9,900 yen (about US$65) Base game
Deluxe (download) 11,990 yen (about US$78) Base game, an original outfit for Makoto Daito, a set of four performers, a set of four weapons, a set of three stage effects, promotional posters, a record player for listening to the soundtrack, and expanded camera features
Collector’s Edition (PS5, limited quantity) 18,000 yen (about US$118) The physical base game, a newly illustrated box, a special steelbook, a vinyl record featuring the theme song and other tracks, and a Deluxe upgrade DLC code

The preorder bonus is the same across every edition: the in-game dosu blade Kagekiri. Steam spells out that you have to buy before 13:59 on January 15, 2027 to qualify. Individual retailers are offering their own early-purchase bonuses on top of that, including wallpapers, stickers, pins and calendars.

The Deluxe Edition is a 3,000 yen (about US$20) step up. It’s mostly outfits, performers and stage effects, with no added story. How much that’s worth comes down to how deep you plan to dig into building shows as an impresario.

What kind of game is STRANGER THAN HEAVEN? Five eras and the business of putting on shows

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is an action adventure that splits the 50 years from 1915 to 1965 into five eras and five cities. The official Steam description frames it as the story of men with nowhere to go home to, tracked against the upheaval of modern Japan, and the game rests on two pillars: bare-fisted brawling and the management side of putting on shows as an impresario.

It’s a single-player game. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is developing and Sega is publishing. Supported languages are Japanese, English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) and Spanish (Latin America), all with interface and subtitle support.

Now that we know Kokura is the first city, I want to know the other four. The official side hasn’t revealed them, so I’m not going to speculate here.

Who’s in the cast and on the soundtrack? Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Snoop Dogg

Yu Shirota plays protagonist Makoto Daito, Dean Fujioka plays his partner Yu Mashiro, and Snoop Dogg plays Orpheus the trader. Sega’s official press release also names Ado and Tori Kelly, and lists the late 2Pac and the late Bunta Sugawara as special appearances. Sega says 2Pac was recreated in CG without the use of AI, produced in cooperation with Amaru Entertainment.

As for the theme song, Famitsu reports that a livestream revealed a track called STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, performed by Ado, Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara and Tori Kelly, is being prepared for release. As of October 2026 there has been no official word on a release date.

Yu Shirota and Dean Fujioka’s singing scenes first surfaced at Tokyo Game Show 2026, and the new trailer shows the stage again. Because the two actors are singing as themselves, the performance scenes carry a density you’d expect from a music game, which this isn’t.

What gives me pause? The Steam date listing and the unconfirmed PC requirements

Three things. The Steam store lists the release date as January 14, 2027; the PC requirements are still undecided; and even the Standard Edition isn’t cheap at 8,990 yen (about US$59).

The January 14 listing on Steam is most naturally read as Japan’s January 15 displayed in universal time, but Sega hasn’t spelled that out. The preorder bonus cutoff is explicitly 13:59 Japan time on January 15, so use that as your reference point.

Both the minimum and recommended PC specs are still listed as TBD. All we’re told is that a 64-bit processor is required. Where the requirements land for a game rendering 50 years’ worth of cities is something we’ll have to wait on before launch.

On price, it sits at the same level as Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and its peers, and Game Pass support softens the blow on the Xbox side. As someone who plays on Steam Deck, I want those specs announced first.

In summary: STRANGER THAN HEAVEN’s release date, pricing and trailer highlights

The first STRANGER THAN HEAVEN story trailer went live on October 16, 2026, covering the 1915 Kokura chapter. Makoto Daito (Yu Shirota) stows away on a ghost ship, meets Yu Mashiro (Dean Fujioka), and starts down the road to becoming an impresario in Kokura. The game launches January 15, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam, Microsoft Store) and Xbox Game Pass. Pricing is 8,990 yen (about US$59) for Standard, 9,900 yen (about US$65) for the physical edition, 11,990 yen (about US$78) for Deluxe and 18,000 yen (about US$118) for the Collector’s Edition. The preorder bonus is the dosu blade Kagekiri.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

What the trailer sells isn’t spectacle, it’s the conviction of its setting: Kokura in 1915. A ghost ship, a stowaway, an impresario. Asked what Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio would build once it left Kamurocho behind, the footage answers head-on. The price is steep, but for a game covering five eras in one package, the number makes sense.

Three months to go until January 15, 2027. I’ll wait on the PC specs and look forward to the rest of Kokura.
