Twenty-nine years. That is the number that carries the most weight here.

On October 23, 2026, Square Enix announced that Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven has passed one million units in combined worldwide shipments and digital sales. The game launched on October 24, 2024, which puts the million milestone right on the doorstep of its second anniversary.

And for the SaGa series, this is the first million-seller in 29 years, since SaGa Frontier in 1997. It is a long-running series, but numbers on this scale have been absent from it for a very long time.

To mark the occasion, Square Enix has released a newly drawn illustration by Yoshiro Ambe along with a commemorative video. This article breaks down what went into the milestone, what that 29-year gap actually means, and what the full 3D remake changed and what it left alone.

When did Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven cross one million units?

Square Enix announced it on October 23, 2026. The figure is a combined worldwide total of physical shipments and digital sales, and it has crossed one million units.

Item Detail
Announcement date October 23, 2026
Milestone reached Over 1 million units in worldwide shipments and digital sales
Release date October 24, 2024
Previous series million-seller SaGa Frontier, 1997 (29 years ago)
Commemorative plans A newly drawn illustration by Yoshiro Ambe and a commemorative video

Hitting the milestone just shy of the second anniversary says a lot about how this title sells. Rather than burning through its audience in the launch month, it stacked sales up over two years. That is the shape of a game built to sell for a long time through discounts and multiplatform reach, and as a trajectory for a remake, it is close to ideal.

What did the full 3D remake change, and what survived?

This is a full 3D remake of 1993’s Romancing SaGa 2 that keeps the original’s distinctive systems intact while adding one new element: United Attacks.

Element How the remake handles it
Free Scenario Carried over
Glimmer Carried over
Formations Carried over
United Attacks Newly added
Growth system Reworked
Difficulty Difficulty options added
Graphics and events Rebuilt in full 3D, event scenes fully voiced

The story covers the war between the Seven Heroes and the successive emperors of the Varennes Empire. The structure itself, where the throne passes from one emperor to the next across centuries of fighting, is exactly as it was in the original.

The addition worth paying attention to, in my view, is the difficulty settings. The original Romancing SaGa 2 was the kind of game that could leave you softlocked if you pushed ahead without understanding its systems. The remake drops difficulty options into that gap while leaving Free Scenario and Glimmer completely untouched. That split, between what gets preserved and what gets eased, has to be part of why the number reads one million.

Which platforms can you play it on?

It is available on seven platforms, covering Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and PC via Steam.

Platform
Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Switch
PlayStation 5
PlayStation 4
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox on PC
PC (Steam)

That spread is one of the reasons it took two years to reach a million. It covers both the Switch family, where you can play on a handheld, and Steam, where discounts cycle fast. People assume the SaGa series demands that you sit down and commit, but this is also a title that suits chipping away at it in short bursts with a sleep mode in between. …There are probably a lot of people with this one installed on a Steam Deck and still untouched.

In summary: the first million in 29 years, landed just before the second anniversary

Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven passed one million units in worldwide shipments and digital sales per the October 23, 2026 announcement. The milestone arrived just short of the second anniversary of its October 24, 2024 release, and it is the SaGa series’ first million-seller in 29 years, since SaGa Frontier in 1997. Square Enix marked it with a newly drawn illustration by Yoshiro Ambe and a commemorative video.

The game is a full 3D remake of 1993’s Romancing SaGa 2. It carries over Free Scenario, Glimmer, and Formations while newly introducing United Attacks, reworking the growth system, adding difficulty options, and fully voicing the event scenes. It is available on seven platforms: Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and PC via Steam.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

This million was not won with a launch sprint. It is the result of spreading across seven platforms over two years and lowering the barrier to entry with difficulty options, while refusing to water down the difficult signature systems, Free Scenario and Glimmer, by even a fraction. Sand the original’s quirks off a remake and the veterans walk; leave them in and newcomers never get through the door. Having proved in hard numbers that you can do both, this should shape how Square Enix approaches its other remakes.

Twenty-nine years. I will say it plainly: here’s hoping the next million does not take anywhere near that long.
