The anime adaptation of Kaiju No. 8 will wrap up on the big screen: the finale is coming to theaters in 2027, as announced on October 24 at the Defense Force Boot Camp in Tachikawa event in Tachikawa, Tokyo, and on the series’ official X account. The super teaser visual is a new illustration by Shinji Kimura, art director on the TV series, and the tagline beneath it reads “The age of humankind ends.” As of October 2026, no release month or date has been announced.

Production on the finale was already confirmed back on December 20, 2025 at Jump Festa 2026. What is new here is that it will be a movie rather than a third TV season. Season 2 ended on September 27, 2025 with episode 23, “The Second Wave,” and everything after that point now belongs to the theatrical screen.

Naoya Matsumoto’s manga ran on Shonen Jump+ from July 2020 to July 2025 and has already finished, which means the ending is public knowledge on paper. And yet you still want to see it animated. As someone who followed the TV series week to week, getting to watch what comes after that second wave at feature-film density is worth the wait. This article lays out the release window, the story the movie will cover, the staff and cast, and the full run from season 1 to this announcement.

Start with the thing everyone wants to know: when.

When does the Kaiju No. 8 movie release?

As of October 2026 the only official line is “2027,” with no month or date given. What was revealed at the October 24 event and on the official X account was that the finale is a theatrical film, that it arrives in 2027, the super teaser visual, and a comment from Masaya Fukunishi, the voice of Kafka.

Item As of October 27, 2026
Title Kaiju No. 8 (theatrical film)
Role in the series Final chapter of the anime series
Release window 2027 (month and date unannounced)
Announcement date October 24, 2026 (Defense Force Boot Camp in Tachikawa and official X)
Teaser visual New artwork by Shinji Kimura (art director, TV series). Tagline: “The age of humankind ends.”
Where the story left off Season 2, episode 23, “The Second Wave” (aired September 27, 2025)

The visual shows an unidentified large-scale kaiju standing over a collapsed city, carrying straight over the sheer scale of the second wave the Defense Force ran into late in season 2. My guess is that the release month gets announced at the next big stage, Jump Festa 2027 in December, or early in the new year. That is speculation, so wait for the official word.

What story will the movie tell?

Per the official announcement, the film covers the Defense Force pushed to the brink by evolved kaiju, the schemes of Kaiju No. 9 after absorbing Isao Shinomiya, and the last fight of Kafka, who has accepted what it means to battle as Kaiju No. 8. Season 2 closed with Kaiju No. 9 absorbing Isao Shinomiya and walking away while the second wave crashed down on the Defense Force. All of what follows becomes the movie.

Since the manga has already finished on Shonen Jump+, there is no question that the film goes all the way to the end. The question is runtime. Season 2 sprinted through the middle of the manga in 11 episodes, and packing everything that remains into a single feature demands serious triage. That is exactly what manga readers will worry about, and conversely, people who came in through the anime get the luxury of walking into the theater knowing nothing. I read the manga first, so honestly, I am jealous.

Who is on the staff and cast?

No director or screenwriter for the film has been announced as of October 2026. Reports say animation production stays with Production I.G and kaiju design and works with Studio Khara, the same lineup as the TV series. On the TV side, Shigeyuki Miya directed and Yuichiro Kido handled series composition and scripts, and Shinji Kimura, who drew the teaser visual, was the series’ art director.

Next year is the year I turn 32, the same age as Kafka. I cannot help feeling that there is something like fate in reaching the final chapter at this exact moment…! I will put everything I have into building out this work I love.

Masaya Fukunishi, the voice of Kafka Hibino, is 31 in 2026 and turns 32 in 2027, the same age as Kafka. The story of a 32-year-old man who joins the Defense Force gets closed out by a 32-year-old voice actor. Coincidences like that, happening outside the fiction itself, are the kind of thing only a long-running series gets to collect. Fukunishi’s comment confirms he is returning, but other cast members and the theme song have not been announced, so I will not state anything there as fact.

Role Credited (TV series)
Director Shigeyuki Miya
Series composition and scripts Yuichiro Kido
Art director Shinji Kimura (also drew the film’s teaser visual)
Animation production Production I.G
Kaiju design and works Studio Khara
Kafka Hibino / Kaiju No. 8 Masaya Fukunishi (returning for the film)

How did we get from the manga’s ending to the movie?

The manga finishing, season 2 airing, the finale being greenlit, the movie reveal: all of it landed inside a year and a half. Line the dates up and you can see how quickly the call to make the finale a film came together.

Date Event
July 3, 2020 Manga begins serialization on Shonen Jump+ (Naoya Matsumoto)
April to June 2024 TV anime season 1 airs (12 episodes)
July 18, 2025 Manga concludes
July to September 27, 2025 TV anime season 2 airs (11 episodes, ending with episode 23, “The Second Wave”)
December 20, 2025 Jump Festa 2026 confirms the finale is in production
October 24, 2026 Finale announced as a theatrical film releasing in 2027

Season 2 ended two months after the manga did, the finale was confirmed in production three months later, and the movie reveal came another ten months after that. Rather than splitting the rest into a third season, the team chose to close it out in one film. Jump titles handing their endings to a movie is no longer unusual, but because the Kaiju No. 8 TV run stops at two seasons, how densely that film is built will decide how the whole adaptation is remembered.

Summary: what we know about the Kaiju No. 8 movie

The Kaiju No. 8 movie arrives in 2027 as the final chapter of the anime series. The release month and date are unannounced as of October 2026. It was revealed on October 24 at the Defense Force Boot Camp in Tachikawa and on the official X account, alongside a super teaser visual newly drawn by Shinji Kimura and the tagline “The age of humankind ends.” The film picks up after season 2’s episode 23, “The Second Wave,” covering the schemes of Kaiju No. 9 after it absorbed Isao Shinomiya and the last fight of Kafka, who has accepted what it means to battle as Kaiju No. 8. Masaya Fukunishi returns as Kafka Hibino. The director, screenwriter and theme song are unannounced. The manga finished on Shonen Jump+ in July 2025.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

Now that the finale is a movie, the “too rushed” worry from season 2 only gets bigger. Compress everything that is left into one feature and opinions will split over which episodes got cut. Even so, seeing what comes after the second wave on a big screen is the thing readers of this series have wanted most.

I expect the release month to land at year’s end or early next year. Good time to rewatch the season 2 finale.
