Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO hits Japanese theaters on Friday, January 15, 2027. Shinn Asuka is the lead. The film sits in the gap between SEED DESTINY and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, set in Cosmic Era 74, and the story kicks off when the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen by an unknown party.

A special broadcast on October 9, 2026, plus the New York Comic Con 2026 panel, dumped out everything at once: a teaser trailer, a teaser visual, staff, cast, new merchandise, advance tickets, and even a GUNDAM-Con2027 stage event. Here is the full rundown, built entirely on the official announcements and that broadcast.

On the broadcast, director Mitsuo Fukuda revealed that work on this film’s script started before SEED FREEDOM, and that series composition writer Chiaki Morosawa carried it all the way to a final script. The starting point for the whole project, he said, was going back and interrogating the “in-between” for Shinn and Lunamaria that DESTINY never got to tell.

A boy collapsed in tears on the lunar surface at the end of one series, then showed up smiling and fighting in the next film. What happened in between? If you have followed this franchise, that blank space has nagged at you at least once, and it is finally getting filled in.

Let us start with the release date and the footage.

When Does Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Open? January 15, 2027, With a Teaser Trailer and Teaser Visual

The theatrical release is Friday, January 15, 2027, which puts roughly three months between the announcement and opening day. The teaser trailer and teaser visual went live at the same time, and the film’s official site also opened on October 9.

The teaser opens on Kira saying, “No matter how many times we get blown away, we will plant flowers again,” then cuts to Shinn shouting, “I do not understand!” and “I thought they were the enemy, but Kira was not, and neither was Athrun.” There is a moment where Lunamaria is asked, “Luna, why did you come to COMPASS?” and fires the question back with “Why did you, Shinn?” Agnes turns up, addressed as “Lady Valkyrie of Moonlight,” there is a call for Level One Battle Stations, and it closes on “I am going out too!” The final line left on screen is, “ZERO is zero, but it is not nothing. It is the true beginning.”

The teaser visual centers on a troubled-looking Shinn Asuka with Kira Yamato and Athrun Zala placed behind him, built around the red that has always been Shinn’s signature color. The teaser footage uses theatrical-grade animation and CG, and Fukuda said on the broadcast that it is “powered up considerably compared to FREEDOM.”

What Is the Story? C.E. 74, the Founding of COMPASS, and the Strike Freedom Heist

SEED FREEDOM ZERO is a prequel that fills the void between the final battle of SEED DESTINY and the opening of SEED FREEDOM. It takes place in Cosmic Era 74, and in a post-Destiny Plan world where COMPASS is still being assembled, the Strike Freedom Gundam gets stolen.

Following the collapse of the “Destiny Plan” proposed by Durandal, which sought to determine human destiny by genetics, work was underway to establish the world peace monitoring organization “COMPASS,” led by Cagalli, the representative of the Orb Union, in pursuit of a new peaceful order

According to the special broadcast, Shinn has come out of a massive war without having found the path he is supposed to walk. Then the Strike Freedom is stolen, and Shinn and company throw themselves back into combat to stop the incident from spiraling, to recover the stolen machine, and to protect what matters to them.

The clever part of this premise is that the stolen unit is Kira’s. In FREEDOM, Shinn and Kira stand side by side as COMPASS members like it is the most natural thing in the world, and this film uses the fight to recover the Strike Freedom to show how they ended up on the same side. When Shinn says in the teaser that he “thought they were the enemy,” that is him mid-journey. That is my reading of the teaser, not an official explanation.

Who Wrote the Script? Chiaki Morosawa’s Final Script and Director Mitsuo Fukuda’s Comments

The screenplay is credited to Shigeru Morita, Chiaki Morosawa, and Mitsuo Fukuda. Series composition goes to Morita and Morosawa, Fukuda directs, Hisashi Hirai handles character design and chief animation direction, and Toshihiko Sahashi composes the score. The official line is that the scenario was finalized by Morosawa, Morita, and Fukuda during SEED FREEDOM’s planning phase.

In his message on the special broadcast, Fukuda explained that the script began taking shape a little before SEED FREEDOM started, and that his wife Chiaki Morosawa, who shaped the series as a whole, was the one who took it to a final script. Morosawa saw it as a bridge from the TV series to the films, a place to write the parts of DESTINY that never got resolved or paid off. She said often, Fukuda noted, that “Lunamaria never got to be fully drawn.”

The same goes for Shinn. The distance between the boy left sobbing on the lunar surface at the end of DESTINY and the Shinn of FREEDOM is, in Fukuda’s words, “far too big a leap,” and asking what happened to him and what he thought in between is where the project began. He also confirmed that the animation and CG are theatrical grade and substantially stronger than FREEDOM, and that FREEDOM’s warm reception is what got this film greenlit at all, saying he was allowed to make “a FREEDOM ZERO that was close to being buried.”

Fukuda is also directing Future GPX Cyber Formula ASURADA, which opens on February 19, 2027, giving him back-to-back directorial releases in January and February. There is no official explanation of how the two productions are staffed differently, but having the SEED script locked down as Morosawa’s final draft well in advance is probably part of what made running them in parallel possible. That is speculation on my part.

Kira Yamato, Lacus Clyne, Athrun Zala, and Cagalli Yula Athha all appear as well.

According to GAME Watch’s report, the teaser also features Yzak, Dearka, Murrue, and Mwu, and Agnes has gone blonde. On the mobile suit side, the Infinite Justice Gundam and Strike Freedom Gundam, both carried over from DESTINY, are named officially, and the outlet reports spotting the Murasame Kai (Early Production Type), the GOUF Ignited Custom, GOUF Ignited units for Agnes and Leonard, the GYAN Strom, and Lunamaria’s GELGOOG Menace in the footage.

What Merchandise Is Coming? Three HG Kits, METAL ROBOT SPIRITS, Ichiban Kuji, and an MSV Serialized Feature in Hobby Japan

On the Gunpla side, three HG kits are confirmed: the Infinite Justice Gundam & Booster Unit, the GOUF Ignited Custom, and the Murasame Kai (Early Production Type). METAL ROBOT SPIRITS is putting out an Infinite Justice Gundam (SEED FREEDOM ZERO Ver.). There is also a release-commemorating Ichiban Kuji, plus an official side story, SEED FREEDOM MSV, running as a serialized feature starting with the December 2026 issue of monthly Hobby Japan.

Product Price (tax included) Release
HG 1/144 Murasame Kai (Early Production Type) 2,970 yen (about US$19) December 2026
HG 1/144 Infinite Justice Gundam & Booster Unit 4,070 yen (about US$27) February 2027
HG 1/144 GOUF Ignited Custom 3,190 yen (about US$21) April 2027
METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Infinite Justice Gundam (SEED FREEDOM ZERO Ver.) 19,800 yen (about US$129) January 2027
METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Rising Freedom Gundam Radiance Grandger 26,400 yen (about US$173) January 2027, early sales at the GUNDAM-Con venue
Original soundtrack CD — January 15, 2027

The HG Infinite Justice Gundam & Booster Unit comes with a newly tooled large booster unit and shield. The METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Infinite Justice reproduces the film’s color scheme in paint, adds original markings across the whole body, and includes the new in-film shield, the Hayato no Tate, along with beam effect parts. The Ichiban Kuji gives Shinn Asuka and Lunamaria Hawke their first figures in the MASTERLISE line, new character Leonard Barwey also gets a figure, and the Last One prize is a MASTERLISE Lacus Clyne from SEED FREEDOM.

The sticking point is that the two METAL ROBOT SPIRITS releases add up to 46,200 yen (about US$302), all landing in the same month the film opens. The three HG kits total 10,230 yen (about US$67) and are spread from December to April, so those are easy enough to pick up one at a time. Getting the Infinite Justice with its booster unit in at 4,070 yen (about US$27) is honestly reasonable for an HG.

When Do Advance Tickets Go on Sale? October 16, 1,900 Yen, Plus Purchase and Theater Bonuses

The first Movie Ticket card goes on sale Friday, October 16, 2026, at 1,900 yen (about US$12), sold at participating theaters, with some exceptions, and through online retailers. The purchase bonus is an A5 clear file using the teaser visual. Starting the same day, MOVIE WALKER STORE sells an online version of the Movie Ticket (Mu-Chike) advance ticket, and that one comes with a promotion code for a single Premium Gasha Ticket in the smartphone game SD Gundam G Generation Eternal.

Type Sale date and conditions Bonus
First Movie Ticket card October 16, 1,900 yen (about US$12), at theaters and online retailers A5 clear file with the teaser visual
Advance ticket (online) October 16, via MOVIE WALKER STORE One Premium Gasha Ticket for G Generation Eternal
Theater attendance bonus For screenings from January 15 to 17, 2027 Digital Movie Ticket card with special artwork, switching to the main visual version from the 18th onward
Second Movie Ticket wave Planned, details to follow Unannounced

The card and online bonuses are completely different, so the choice is simple: if you want the clear file, buy the physical card at a theater or online retailer, and if you play G Generation Eternal, go for the online advance ticket. Seeing the film during its first three days also nets the special-artwork digital card, so opening-weekend crowds will want to note that too.

Bottom Line: SEED FREEDOM ZERO Opens January 15, 2027, and Advance Tickets Land October 16

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO opens Friday, January 15, 2027. Shinn Asuka leads a story set between DESTINY and FREEDOM, built around the theft of the Strike Freedom during the founding of COMPASS in C.E. 74. Chiaki Morosawa took the script to a final draft, then finalized it with Shigeru Morita and director Mitsuo Fukuda. New character Leonard Barwey is voiced by Daisuke Ono. The first wave of advance tickets arrives October 16 at 1,900 yen (about US$12), with three HG kits, two METAL ROBOT SPIRITS releases, an Ichiban Kuji, and an MSV serialized feature starting in Hobby Japan’s December issue all on the way. The SEED stages at GUNDAM-Con2027 run January 10 and 11, and SEED Grand Prix 2026 takes daily votes through November 30.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

This is not a sequel to FREEDOM. It is a sequel to DESTINY, written from Chiaki Morosawa’s final script, and that single fact is what makes it matter. Centering Shinn and Lunamaria, and starting from the side that just had Kira’s machine stolen out from under it, is a design built to go back and pick up the perspective DESTINY abandoned. The merchandise all stacks up in the release month, so start clearing room in your budget for January.

Time to go see what happened to the boy who cried on the moon. January 15.
