A TV anime adaptation of The Record of a Fallen Vampire was announced on October 5, 2026, with a 2027 broadcast. Yuma Uchida voices protagonist Rose Red Strauss, and Aino Shimada plays Bridget Irving Frostheart, the leader of the dhampirs. Animation production is Zero-G x Liber, Mankyu directs and handles series composition, and Evan Call is writing the music.

The source manga was written by Kyo Shirodaira and drawn by Yuri Kimura, serialized in Monthly Shonen Gangan from September 2003 to March 2007 and completed in nine volumes. This is its first screen adaptation, 24 years after the serialization began. The broadcaster, streaming platforms, and air month are unannounced as of October 2026.

Say Kyo Shirodaira and you think In/Spectre, Blast of Tempest, Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning. All of them got anime. This was the big one left on the shelf. It ran quietly alongside Fullmetal Alchemist during Gangan’s hottest stretch, telling a thousand-year vampire revenge story without ever raising its voice, and for the 19 years since it ended people have kept asking when its turn would come. I was one of them.

This piece sorts through what was announced, who’s in the cast and on staff, what kind of story the manga is, and where it sits in the lineage of Kyo Shirodaira adaptations.

Let’s start with what’s settled and what isn’t.

When does The Record of a Fallen Vampire air? In 2027, with broadcaster and streaming unannounced

The broadcast is announced for 2027. As of October 2026 there is no official word on the broadcaster, the streaming services, or the starting month. A teaser visual and teaser PV dropped alongside the announcement, and an official site and official X account are now live.

Item Details
Broadcast window 2027 (month, broadcaster, and streaming unannounced)
Animation production Zero-G x Liber
Director and series composition Mankyu
Character design jimao
Music Evan Call
Rose Red Strauss Yuma Uchida
Bridget Irving Frostheart Aino Shimada
Source manga Story by Kyo Shirodaira, art by Yuri Kimura, Monthly Shonen Gangan, 9 volumes

The teaser PV shows Strauss, resolved to abandon his kingdom to reclaim his sealed queen, facing off against Bridget as she tries to stop him under a red moon. Rather than opening on the start of the story, it leads with the scene where the two characters’ positions split for good. Anyone who knows the manga will look at that framing and immediately think, so that’s where they’re starting.

Who’s in the cast and on staff? Yuma Uchida as Strauss, music by Evan Call

Yuma Uchida leads as Strauss, with Aino Shimada as Bridget in the female lead role. Uchida describes Strauss as a very strong, very quiet person whose every action carries deep meaning, while Shimada says Bridget carries strength and nobility along with a profound sadness accumulated over a long life.

Strauss, known as the Vampire King of the Roses, is the last king of a kingdom of night, and he spends most of the story behind a blank expression and silence. It’s a role that has to convey weight through restraint rather than vocal swings. Yuma Uchida has earned his reputation on characters who keep their feelings locked down, like Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen, so this casting reads as the obvious call.

The staff name that jumps out is Evan Call on music. Known for the scores to Violet Evergarden and Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, he specializes in lyrical, orchestra-forward work. A story about a thousand years of love and revenge needs music that conveys the weight of time rather than flashy battle cues. This pick reads the heart of the series correctly.

Director and series composition writer Mankyu previously directed The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague. He isn’t strongly associated with serious long-form fantasy, but the single most important skill this project needs is the structural discipline to fold nine volumes into one or two cours, and having one person hold both jobs keeps the responsibility in one place.

What is The Record of a Fallen Vampire? A thousand-year revenge story completed in nine volumes

The Record of a Fallen Vampire is set in a world where vampires, humans, and dhampirs (their mixed-blood descendants) coexist, and follows Rose Red Strauss, the last king of the kingdom of night, through a thousand-year effort to recover his queen Adelheid, sealed away by humans. It ran in Monthly Shonen Gangan from September 2003 to March 2007 and wrapped at nine collected volumes.

Its defining trait is that the protagonist is the strongest character from page one and still doesn’t win. Strauss holds overwhelming power, yet he abandons his country, loses his allies, and spends a thousand years moving toward a single goal. In shonen manga terms it’s the inverse of a growth arc: a portrait of how someone who has already lost everything keeps living. The Shirodaira trademark of packing in both the logic and the emotion in full is working here too.

Bridget is the leader of the dhampirs and shares a long, bitter history with Strauss. The teaser PV opening on their standoff probably reflects the fact that the spine of this series isn’t the fighting, it’s two people on opposite sides carrying the same grief. Aino Shimada’s comment about deep sadness within a long life lands squarely on the core of that role.

Here’s the honest concern. Fitting nine volumes into a single 12-episode cour in 2027 would mean serious compression. The structure that jumps across a thousand years and the slow accumulation toward the late-game revelations are what make the series work, and cutting there would leave it looking like a generic vampire story. Waiting for the episode count is the correct posture for manga fans right now.

How many Kyo Shirodaira adaptations are there? Lining up In/Spectre, Blast of Tempest, and Spiral

Kyo Shirodaira has written a string of hit manga as the story credit, and most of them have been adapted. The Record of a Fallen Vampire was the last of his major works still waiting for a screen version.

Title Serialization Anime
Spiral: The Bonds of Reasoning 1999–2005 (Monthly Shonen Gangan) 2002
The Record of a Fallen Vampire 2003–2007 (Monthly Shonen Gangan) 2027 (announced now)
Blast of Tempest 2009–2013 (Monthly Shonen Gangan) 2012–2013
In/Spectre 2015–present (Shonen Magazine R, then Monthly Shonen Magazine) 2020, 2023 (season 2)

Line them up and the pattern is clear: Spiral was adapted mid-serialization, Blast of Tempest ran alongside the manga’s final stretch, and In/Spectre was adapted while still ongoing. The Record of a Fallen Vampire is the only one airing two decades after its ending, and the only case where the manga is already complete. Adapting with the full story available, ending included, buys a lot of structural freedom.

There’s no official explanation for why now. Still, In/Spectre getting a second season in the 2020s put Shirodaira’s name back in circulation, and quiet, grown-up fantasy becoming a mainstream pillar thanks to shows like Frieren and The Apothecary Diaries has to be a tailwind. That’s my read rather than a stated fact, but the ground for greenlighting this project has been forming for years.

Wrap-up: airing in 2027, Yuma Uchida and Aino Shimada, music by Evan Call, broadcaster still to come

The Record of a Fallen Vampire is getting a TV anime in 2027. Yuma Uchida plays Strauss and Aino Shimada plays Bridget. Zero-G x Liber animates, Mankyu directs and writes the series composition, jimao designs the characters, and Evan Call scores it. The manga, by Kyo Shirodaira and Yuri Kimura, ran in Monthly Shonen Gangan and finished at nine volumes, making this its first screen adaptation in the 24th year since serialization began. The broadcaster, streaming, air month, and episode count are all unannounced as of October 2026, with updates coming through the official site and official X account.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

The one major Kyo Shirodaira manga that had never been adapted is finally moving, 19 years after it ended. Hiring Evan Call is a statement of intent about carrying the weight of a thousand years in the score, and Yuma Uchida’s quiet lead meshes with it. The only worry is compressing nine volumes, so keeping both hype and dread on hold until the episode count lands is the right call.

That plain, heavy book that sat next to Fullmetal Alchemist on the Gangan shelf. Its turn finally came around.
