Comments streaming right to left across a Nintendo Switch screen. That sight comes to an end at 23:59 on Wednesday, March 31, 2027. On October 13, 2026, Dwango announced it is shutting down the Niconico app for Nintendo Switch.
And at the same time, another line was drawn. There are no plans to support Nintendo Switch 2 — the official notice says so in writing. So this isn’t a story about moving to the next console. It’s a story about the whole culture of watching Niconico Douga on a home game console taking its final bow.
The service launched on Thursday, July 13, 2017. Run it to the finish line and that’s roughly 10 years. An app that went up in the same year the Switch itself launched, and rode shotgun with the hardware for its entire lifespan, is disappearing. Here’s the shutdown schedule, the exact wording on Switch 2, what happens to your account, and everything inside the “Thanks for Playing So Much” campaign, all based on the official notice posted to Niconico Info.
- Service ends March 31, 2027, with new downloads stopping February 28
- The notice states flatly that there are no plans to support Nintendo Switch 2
- Accounts and My Lists aren’t going anywhere — the browser version and the apps carry on
- Every item in the “thank you” campaign handing back 10 years of viewing history
Start with the dates. Get these wrong and you end up in the “wait, I can’t download it anymore?” camp.
When does Niconico for Switch shut down?
The Nintendo Switch version of Niconico shuts down at 23:59 on Wednesday, March 31, 2027. But the software disappears from the Nintendo eShop more than a month before that. There are two stages here, and both are worth noting.
| Date and time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 23:59, Sunday, February 28, 2027 | New downloads of the software end on the Nintendo eShop |
| 23:59, Wednesday, March 31, 2027 | Nintendo Switch Niconico service ends |
| After the shutdown | Launching the software shows a service-ended screen |
The February 28 cutoff is the one to watch. The app may be free, but once the window to grab it closes, “there’s still a month left, I’ll install it then” stops working. After the shutdown, launching the app only gets you that service-ended screen, so if you want one last look at comments flying across the display, downloading it before the end of February is the only way to get there.
Is there no Nintendo Switch 2 support?
There isn’t. The Niconico Info notice states in writing that there are no plans to offer the app on Switch 2.
*In light of our service rollout policy for the new Nintendo Switch 2 platform and its various requirements, there are no plans to support Niconico.

Not “under consideration,” not “stay tuned” — flatly saying there are no plans is what makes this land hard. Switch 2 is backward compatible and can run Switch software, but an online app whose service has been cut off falls outside what compatibility covers. The takeaway: from April 2027, there will be no official way to watch Niconico Douga on Switch-family hardware.
Dwango cites “our service rollout policy for the new platform and its various requirements” as the reason. The specifics haven’t been disclosed, so everything past this point is speculation, but my read is that this comes from weighing the cost of continuing to build platform-by-platform support for a video service against the reality that phone and browser viewing has become the norm.
Will the shutdown delete my account and My Lists?
No. Your Niconico account and My Lists stay exactly as they are, and you can keep using them through the browser version of Niconico Douga or the mobile apps.
The official notice puts it plainly: your Niconico account, your My Lists, and the memories you’ve built up are not going to vanish. What’s ending is the Switch client, not the service itself. That’s easy to conflate, so there’s no need to see the shutdown news and start frantically backing up My Lists by hand.
There is one condition, though. If you created your account through the Switch version of Niconico and want to use it on the PC or mobile browser version or the iOS/Android apps, the notice directs you to check the steps in the official help pages. Anyone whose first Niconico account was made on a Switch should get that squared away sooner rather than later.
Alternatives if you want to watch on a big TV screen
For anyone who used the Switch as a “box for watching Niconico on the TV,” Dwango is pointing to Chromecast and Google Cast-compatible devices. The feel of the remote controls and the comment display will obviously change, but the core use case — watching on a big screen — survives. Considering the Switch dock was effectively doing a casting device’s job all along, that’s a straightforward replacement.
What is the “Thanks for Playing So Much” campaign?
It’s a thank-you project that hands eligible users a record of what they did in the Switch version of Niconico. There are two parts, both running in the lead-up to the shutdown.
Campaign #1 is “Your Nintendo Switch™ Niconico Record.” Delivered through the notifications feature, it’s set to include the following nine items.
- The day you first watched a video
- How many days you watched videos
- How many times you watched videos
- The day you first posted a comment
- How many comments you posted
- The day you first hit Like
- How many times you hit Like
- The day you first added something to My List
- How many times you added to My List
Campaign #2 is an achievement grant: eligible users receive the “Thanks for Using Nintendo Switch™ Niconico” achievement.
How to qualify for the campaign
You qualify by meeting both #1 and #2 on the same Niconico account.
| Condition | Details |
|---|---|
| #1 | Watched a video in the Switch version of Niconico at some point between Thursday, July 13, 2017 and Sunday, February 28, 2027 |
| #2 | Watched Niconico Douga on the PC version, the mobile browser version, or the iOS/Android app at some point between Thursday, October 1, 2026 and Sunday, February 28, 2027 |
Condition #2 is the easy one to miss. Watching on Switch alone doesn’t qualify you. You need to run through the browser version or an app at least once on the same account on or after October 1, 2026. If you want that record, install the app on your phone and play a single video — that alone clears the bar. The window runs through February 28, 2027, so take care of it whenever you remember.
Note that the official notice adds that campaign details are subject to change without prior notice. Keep in mind that the list of items could still grow or shrink.
After roughly 10 years, what exactly is ending with Switch Niconico?
The Switch version of Niconico did two things: play videos posted to Niconico, and display comments scrolling right to left. Put another way, it was the only official environment where you could take Niconico’s greatest invention — the comment barrage — on a big TV screen, controller in hand, lying flat on the couch.
Niconico on a phone has too small a screen for that sensation of a barrage blanketing your field of view. Niconico on a PC tends to become something you half-watch while working. Sitting in front of a TV with nothing to do but watch the comments roll by was an experience that only existed because the Switch was there as a box to do it in. That closes in March 2027.
On the other hand, the Switch 2 decision itself is a line I can understand. Rebuilding a video app for every hardware generation is a tug-of-war between user numbers and development cost. If Niconico’s call was to pool its resources into the browser and the apps, then presenting the Chromecast workaround in the same breath is an honest way to deliver it. It stings, but it tracks.

Switch Niconico shutdown: the key points
One last run through the dates and facts that matter.
- Service ends: 23:59, Wednesday, March 31, 2027
- New downloads end: 23:59, Sunday, February 28, 2027
- There are no plans to support Nintendo Switch 2 (stated in the official notice)
- Niconico accounts and My Lists won’t be deleted, and remain usable on the browser version and the apps
- The alternative for TV viewing is Chromecast and Google Cast-compatible devices
- The thank-you campaign requires that you also watched on the browser version or an app on or after October 1, 2026
- The service launched Thursday, July 13, 2017, for roughly 10 years in all
There are only two things to do. If you haven’t installed the app, download it before February 28, 2027. If you want the record, run through the browser version or an app once on the same account. Both take a couple of minutes.
As shutdown announcements go, this one is unusually considerate. It separates the end-of-service date from the download cutoff and spells out both, leads with the fact that accounts aren’t going anywhere, points to an alternative for TV viewing, and on top of all that puts together a campaign handing back 10 years of viewing history. Stating the lack of Switch 2 support outright instead of fudging it with “under consideration” deserves credit too — it’s the honest way to avoid letting users hope for nothing.
The loss is the official route to bathing in a comment barrage on your TV. That particular feeling only ever came out of a Switch dock and a controller. It’s worth pulling that screen up one more time before February 28, 2027.
