Black is coming back to the PS5. On October 13, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) announced that the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black Japanese-language model will launch on Thursday, November 19, 2026. The suggested retail price is 55,000 yen (about US$359, converted at 153 yen to the US dollar), and the model number is CFI-2200B02S.
Pre-orders open Tuesday, October 20, rolling out across PlayStation retailers and online stores in Japan. That means pre-orders arrive one week after the announcement, with the console itself a month later — a brisk schedule by any measure.
Launching alongside it is the Disc Drive Midnight Black (model number CFI-ZDD1J01, 11,980 yen, about US$78), out the same day. Bolt it onto the Digital Edition later and you can read discs after all. But there’s one important catch with this console: it only works with the system language set to Japanese and an account whose country/region is set to Japan. Here’s everything from PlayStation.Blog’s official announcement — price, model number, box contents, full specs, the two-year warranty campaign, and that January 2028 download-only notice.
Let’s lock down the price and dates first. With pre-orders opening October 20, there’s only a week to make up your mind.
How much is the PS5 Digital Edition Midnight Black, and when does it launch?
The suggested retail price is 55,000 yen, with a launch date of Thursday, November 19, 2026. Pre-orders start Tuesday, October 20.
| Item | Details |

That November 19 date carries a second meaning: it’s also the launch day for Grand Theft Auto VI. For anyone who wants the console and the game in hand on the same day, that’s one more reason to get a pre-order locked in. PS5 also hits its sixth anniversary on Thursday, November 12, counting from the original model’s launch, so the new color lands right on that milestone.
What are the restrictions on the Japanese-language model? And how much is the disc drive?
The Japanese-language model only works with the system language set to “Japanese” and an account whose country/region is set to “Japan.” Any other language or region setting won’t do.
SIE spells this condition out in its announcement. As long as you’re in Japan using a Japanese account, it’s a non-issue — but it’s a bad fit as a gift for someone living abroad, or for anyone whose main account is registered to another region. This is the one thing to check before you buy.
The Disc Drive Midnight Black costs 11,980 yen
The Digital Edition ships without a disc drive, but attach the separately sold Disc Drive Midnight Black (model number CFI-ZDD1J01, 11,980 yen) and it’ll read physical games too. It launches on November 19 alongside the console.
In the box: the disc drive itself, a Midnight Black cover, a horizontal stand foot (long), and the instruction manual. Add it to the console and you’re looking at 66,980 yen (about US$438) all in, which gets you a disc-equipped setup in matching black. Line it up next to existing Midnight Black accessories like the PlayStation Portal remote player and the color match quietly pays off.
What’s in the box, and what are the specs? 825GB SSD and 350W power draw
The box includes one console, one DualSense wireless controller, two horizontal stand feet, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable, and the printed documentation. ASTRO’s PLAYROOM comes preinstalled.
There’s no disc drive, and storage is an 825GB Custom SSD. That 825GB figure is the same as the original PS5 model, which means a handful of big releases will fill it. An M.2 SSD expansion slot (Key M) is on board, so this is clearly a configuration built on the assumption that you’ll solve any storage crunch by adding a drive.
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| CPU | x86-64 AMD Ryzen “Zen2”, 8 cores / 16 threads |
| GPU | 10 TFLOPS, RDNA architecture |
| Memory | GDDR6 16GB |
| Storage | 825GB Custom SSD |
| Ports | USB Type-A (10Gbps) x2, USB Type-C (Hi-Speed), USB Type-C (10Gbps), M.2 SSD expansion slot (Key M), disc drive connector |
| Wireless | Bluetooth 5.1 |
| Maximum power draw | 350W |
| Dimensions / weight | Approx. 358 x 80 x 216mm / approx. 2.5kg |
The specs carry over from the current PS5 Digital Edition, so this isn’t a product chasing any performance gain. It’s purely a new color option. Even so, there’s a reason the announcement is getting attention: PS5 has spent its entire life on shelves in the original model’s white-dominant look. In a room where the TV stand and the rack are all black gear, a white console sticks out no matter what you do. An option that fixes that has finally arrived as part of the standard lineup.
Does it qualify for the two-year warranty campaign?
It does. This model is covered by the two-year warranty campaign: buy it and register by Wednesday, March 31, 2027 and the standard one-year warranty is extended by another year, for two years total.
If you’re planning to keep the console for a while, get the registration done. SIE is covering the fine print in a separate campaign announcement, so the safe move is to handle it right after purchase while it’s still fresh. With a November 19 launch and a March 31, 2027 deadline, even day-one buyers get more than four months of breathing room.
From January 2028 onward, it’s download-only
This announcement carries a notice that lands heavier than anything about the disc drive. SIE stated that new PlayStation games released from January 2028 onward will be sold as downloads only. Disc versions released before then will continue to work.
In other words, the reason to buy a disc drive is narrowing down to “so I can read the physical games that already exist.” Anyone hoping to buy new releases on disc after January 2028 won’t be served through official channels. Choosing between the Digital Edition and a disc-equipped setup now comes down to how big your existing disc library is.
Whether the disc drive’s 11,980 yen is worth it hinges on how you read that. If you care about owning physical copies or buying and selling used, this is your last chance to add one; if you barely own any discs, the Digital Edition on its own is plenty.
What PS5 games are landing around November 19?
Grand Theft Auto VI is due on November 19, with GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, and God of War Laufey lined up after it.
Titles already out this year include MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Marvel’s Wolverine. For anyone buying into the platform for the first time, it’s a fine moment — there’s no shortage of things to play. The new color arriving right now looks to me like a deliberate placement timed to the holiday shopping season and that run of big releases.

With pre-orders opening October 20, there isn’t much time to deliberate. If you want everything to match, grabbing one in that first wave is the sure bet.
Nothing here makes the console faster — it’s a pure color variant. Even so, getting Midnight Black into the standard lineup at 55,000 yen is a big deal. The black accessories, the PlayStation Portal remote player among them, showed up first, so the awkward state where only the console was white is finally resolved. If a unified look around the TV matters to you, this is the thing that tips you into an upgrade or a first purchase.
What you can’t afford to miss is the January 2028 download-only notice. Whether you add the 11,980 yen disc drive is no longer a question of “color” — it’s a question of how many discs you already own.
