FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION will let you explore Midgar, the city where the whole story started. The official X account posted a clip on October 26 titled “To Midgar by Chocobo,” showing a chocobo gliding down from high above the city and heading deeper into the area. The game launches on April 8, 2027 for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store, with the Standard Edition priced at US$65.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE was a linear game set entirely inside Midgar, and FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH opened up the world beyond its gates. That makes this the first time the remake series actually goes back to Midgar. Square Enix’s post says players will “explore the area from a new perspective, and may find views and discoveries that were never visible before.”

The clip is short, but the framing is the point: places you could only crane your neck at in REMAKE are now places you descend into from above. This article breaks down what the official post actually says, which locations REMAKE never let you reach, the release date and pricing, and the previously revealed additions such as the Highwind, the new playable characters and the WEAR system.

Start with the official post.

What is in the Midgar clip from the official X account?

In the clip, posted at 11 p.m. on October 26 by the official FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE X account (@FFVIIR_CLOUD), a character riding a chocobo glides from a high point in Midgar and drops into the depths of the area. Here is the post itself.

Square Enix commits to exactly two things here: the Midgar area is explorable, and it is seen from a new perspective. Nothing states which sectors you can enter, or whether that means above the plate or below it. Game Spark reads the footage as looking like you can almost reach the undercity, but that is an interpretation of the clip, not an official explanation. Chocobo gliding was introduced in REBIRTH, and turning Midgar’s extreme verticality into the axis of exploration is a natural fit for it.

Which locations did REMAKE never let you visit?

In FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE you could walk the Sector 7 slums, Mako Reactor 5, the Sector 5 slums, Wall Market in Sector 6 and the Shinra Building, which is to say only the districts the plot passed through. Above the plate, access was limited to the area around the Shinra Building and a few stretches of road, and the slums outside Sector 7 and most of the eight mako reactors were things you looked at from a distance. If REVELATION’s “new perspective” means gliding in from the sky, there is a real chance of landing on districts above the plate or on reactors that were pure background before.

That said, given what happens to Midgar late in REBIRTH, the Midgar you return to may not be the one you remember. The story may well have changed how it looks. That is my read, and it needs official confirmation. Even so, if you can look down on the scar where the Sector 7 plate came down, that alone will leave anyone who played REMAKE without words.

When does it release, and how much does it cost?

The release date is Thursday, April 8, 2027. It ships across six platforms at once, PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store, making it the series’ first simultaneous multiplatform launch. Seven SKUs are on offer, from the US$65 Standard Edition up to the US$508 Complete Edition, which packages all three remake games together.

Edition Price (USD) Format
Standard Edition US$65 Physical / digital
Trilogy Edition (all three games) US$74 Digital (pre-order)
Premium Edition US$93 Digital
Premium Plus Edition US$108 Digital
Deluxe Edition US$125 Physical
Collector’s Edition US$376 Physical
Remake Series Complete Edition US$508 Physical

The one worth staring at is the digital Trilogy Edition: US$9 more than the Standard Edition gets you REMAKE and REBIRTH as well. Both earlier games are playable the moment you pre-order, so anyone starting with REVELATION should enter here. Xbox owners have another route, since FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE joins Game Pass on October 29, and running through Midgar there first is the right call.

What else do we already know about the new features?

Earlier announcements already established that the airship Highwind lets you roam the planet freely and pick your landing spot, that Cid and Vincent join as playable characters, that four types of WEAR (Summoner, Knight and others) change how a character fights, and that synergy abilities with party members return. Midgar exploration slots in on top of all that, which means Midgar is now one more stop inside a game built around circling the planet.

New feature Details
The airship Highwind Roam the planet freely and choose a landing spot to drop into the field
New playable characters Cid, Vincent
WEAR Four outfits that change combat style (Summoner, Knight and others)
Synergy abilities Triggered by pairing up with party members
Midgar area Explorable by chocobo. Revealed in this clip

REBIRTH gated where you could go by story progress, but if the Highwind really does let you choose landing spots, Midgar should be somewhere you can return to whenever you want. Walking through Midgar with Vincent and Cid in tow, the exact sight the original game gave you in its back half, becomes possible in the remake series for the first time. I have spent years insisting my favorites are better off staying two-dimensional, but I am not confident I can wait until April to control Vincent.

Summary: what we know about Midgar exploration in FF7 REVELATION

FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION lets you explore the Midgar area. In the clip the official X account posted on October 26, a chocobo glides from a high point and descends into the depths of the area. Square Enix describes it as “a new perspective” offering “views and discoveries that were never visible before,” and the specifics of which districts you can enter are unannounced. The game launches April 8, 2027 for PS5, Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and the Epic Games Store, with the Standard Edition at US$65. The digital Trilogy Edition at US$74 also makes the first two games playable right away. The airship Highwind, playable Cid and Vincent, WEAR and synergy abilities are the new features already revealed.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

The remake series opened by getting you out of Midgar, and now the finale brings you back. Descending from above is the answer to a first game where all you could do was look up. How far in you can go is still unannounced, and the people who know how REBIRTH ends are the ones who will find this clip’s brevity most suspicious.

Six months until April 8, 2027. If you have not played REMAKE, Game Pass or the Trilogy Edition will get you caught up.
