Dragon Quest Monsters 4: Bianca and Flora in the Land of Withered Trees launches December 3, 2026, and the digital Standard Edition runs 7,700 yen (tax included). The headline additions from September’s info drop are “Field Scout,” which lets you recruit monsters out in the field without ever entering combat, and “Co-op Battle,” which throws multiple parties at a single giant monster. The game spans six platform configurations, including Nintendo Switch 2, Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

I’m Team Flora in Dragon Quest V. That one’s non-negotiable. So the first time I read this game’s subtitle, I made an audible noise at my screen. I genuinely did not expect to see a day when Bianca and Flora shared a title card.

That said, this isn’t a game built to settle the “which one do you pick” argument. Choose one as your protagonist and the other stands beside you as the commander of the standby side. That structure feeds directly into what Co-op Battle actually is.

The demo has been live since September 10, 2026, and any monster you catch there transfers to the full release. Which means you don’t have to wait for launch day to start prepping.

What Is “Field Scout”? Can You Recruit Monsters Without Fighting?

You can. Spot a monster in the field that you want on your team, throw it some meat, and you launch a scout attack without ever dropping into a battle. That’s the new Field Scout mechanic.

According to Square Enix, success rates vary by the type of meat you throw, and pricier cuts recruit more reliably. There’s also a “slightly unusual meat” in the mix. Any monster you successfully scout goes straight into your party or standby roster if there’s room, and gets shipped off to the monster farm if you’re full.

Past DQM games ran on a four-step loop: encounter, battle, win, scout check. The monsters you most want for your compendium have the lowest encounter rates, and every single attempt takes forever. The real pain point across the whole series has always been the cost of one attempt. Field Scout deletes that step entirely.

Speaking as an old-school otaku who used to work the counter: the conversation among people buying DQM games was almost always “I can’t get that last one to show up.” I fell into the exact same pit myself with DQM3 on my Steam Deck. Throw meat, get an instant result, throw again if it fails — at that tempo, even 30 minutes before bed moves the compendium forward.

Is “Co-op Battle” Online-Only?

No. It works solo. Pick Bianca as your protagonist and she leads your party monsters while Flora leads the standby monsters, taking on a giant monster with two parties at once.

On top of that, there is an online component. You can team up with friends or players worldwide in groups of up to four, and clearing the fight within 10 rounds earns rewards. There are three places you’ll run into it: story battles, dedicated Co-op Battle matches in the arena, and online.

Let me be straight about one thing. The official site’s spec sheet still lists “Players: 1” as of right now, and the four-player figure comes from the press announcement (verified on the official site as of September 25, 2026). How the online side eventually gets documented is something we’ll have to watch for between now and launch.

What’s smart about this design is that choosing a protagonist doesn’t mean discarding the other one. In Dragon Quest V, the one you don’t pick vanishes from view. Here, the one you don’t pick stays on as the tactical commander of the standby side. Even if a Flora partisan like me makes Bianca the protagonist, Flora is right there running her own squad. Thirty-four years on, we finally get both.

What Do the Editions Cost? Standard vs. Masters vs. Super Masters

There are three editions. Prices differ between the physical and digital versions, and mixing them up will throw you off by almost 1,000 yen.

Edition Physical Digital
Standard Edition 8,470 yen (tax included) 7,700 yen (tax included)
Masters Edition 13,310 yen (tax included) 12,540 yen (tax included)
Super Masters Edition 25,000 yen (tax included) Not offered (physical only)

The Masters Edition bundles the base game with a four-piece DLC set, the “Road to Monster Master” item set, and — digital only — 48 hours of early access. Getting in two days ahead of launch is a quietly big deal if you’re a compendium completionist.

The Super Masters Edition is physical-only at 25,000 yen. Along with the four-piece DLC set and the item set, it packs in a figure, a flocked doll, a pouch, and a cleaning cloth. Whether you hand over 25,000 yen without first touching that flocked doll in a store comes down to your personal faith. I’m waiting for a display unit to show up in Ikebukuro.

Every edition gets the “Adventure Head Start Set” as an early purchase bonus, and digital buyers also get the “Hearty Meat Set.” We have officially reached the era where meat is a preorder bonus.

Which Platforms Is It On? Watch Out for the Ones With No Physical Edition

There are six platform configurations. Only three of them — Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5 — get a physical edition. Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC (Microsoft Store), and Steam are digital-only.

The Steam version also arrives a day later, on December 4, 2026. If you’re buying on PC, don’t jump the gun searching for it on launch day and panic when it isn’t there.

The demo has been available since September 10, 2026, on Switch 2, Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox on PC (the Steam version arrives alongside the full game). It covers the early stretch of the Kareki region, and you can carry up to eight monsters into the full release.

That carryover comes with strings attached. Any monster you bring over reverts to level 1 with its starting skills, and plus values and lineage both reset. Story progress, items, and gold don’t transfer at all. So there’s no point grinding your demo monsters — you’re only hunting for species. Demo players also receive a “Continue Your Adventure Set” in the full game.

A New Entry in DQM’s 28th Year — The First Numbered Game in Three Years

The original Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland shipped for Game Boy on September 25, 1998 (with Game Boy Color support). Count forward to this game’s release date and the series is entering its 28th year.

The previous entry, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, launched December 1, 2023 on Nintendo Switch. It was the first brand-new numbered installment in roughly 22 years, going back to Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Cobi’s Journey / Tara’s Adventure. Measured against that gap, turning around DQM4 in three years is an unusually fast pace.

And the two women in the subtitle are the heroines of Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride, released for Super Famicom on September 27, 1992. In May 2026, Yuji Horii confirmed that Debora appears as well. Whether all three line up, and how they interact — I’d rather save that one for launch day.

As for where the “Land of Withered Trees” subtitle comes from, Square Enix hasn’t explained it yet.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

Field Scout is a fix aimed squarely at DQM’s single biggest source of frustration — the cost of one scouting attempt — and Co-op Battle is the mechanism that puts Bianca and Flora on the field at the same time. The fact that those two ideas interlock tells you exactly what this game’s design philosophy is. The thing to watch before you buy is the price tag: that 7,700 yen figure you keep seeing is the digital number. The physical edition is 8,470 yen, and the Super Masters Edition is a physical-only 25,000 yen. If you’re on the fence, locking in eight monsters through the free demo costs you nothing.

Take it from a card-carrying Flora partisan: this time you don’t have to choose. You get to bring them both.
