Sega put out an announcement trailer on October 30, 2026 for Lionel Rafale, a new character in VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS, the game it is releasing in 2027. The trailer went up on the official Virtua Fighter YouTube channel. His fighting style is Praying Mantis Kung Fu. He is a young fighter who has turned up in Virasapara, the fictional Southeast Asian city where the game takes place, and he is good enough to overwhelm Cielo, one of the protagonists, in a street fight.
A fighter named Rafale who throws Praying Mantis Kung Fu is going to make everyone think of Lion Rafale, the French character who has been in the series since Virtua Fighter 2. As of October 30, 2026, however, Sega has not officially revealed how Lionel and Lion are connected. Dengeki Online reported that you can read a streak of rebellion against a parent in the trailer’s dialogue and facial expressions, but no official material describes him as a “son.”
This article lays out Lionel Rafale’s official character blurb and fighting style, what the trailer actually shows, whether there is any official word on his link to Lion, plus every character and game detail confirmed so far. Four months on from the June reveal, the new-face lineup is finally filling in.
Let’s start with the official blurb.
Who is Lionel Rafale, and what is his fighting style?
He is a young fighter who has appeared on the streets of Virasapara, and his style is Praying Mantis Kung Fu. He is strong enough to overwhelm protagonist Cielo in a street fight, yet his reason for coming to the city has not been revealed. His signature line is in French: “Les jeux sont faits, rien ne va plus.”
“Les jeux sont faits, rien ne va plus.” Lionel, a young fighter, has appeared in the city of Virasapara. He is skilled enough to overwhelm Cielo in a street fight — but what has brought him to this city?

That signature line is the set phrase a dealer uses at the roulette table when betting closes, and it means “the bets are placed, nothing more can be moved.” In one line it tells you both that the character is a French speaker and that he looks down on his opponent as something to be wagered on. If he says it after beating Cielo, you can assume he is a man who wins in a thoroughly obnoxious way.

| Name | Lionel Rafale |
| Fighting style | Praying Mantis Kung Fu |
| Role | Young fighter who has appeared in Virasapara; his reason for the visit is unknown |
| Relationship to Cielo | Overwhelms him in a street fight |
| Signature line | Les jeux sont faits, rien ne va plus |
| Voice actor | Not announced as of October 30, 2026 |
| Playable | Dengeki Online reported that he joins the roster as a playable character |
The trailer shows him winning that street fight against Cielo in completely one-sided fashion, with technical, throw-heavy play on display. Praying Mantis Kung Fu used to be Lion’s calling card, built on strings of attacks launched from a low stance, and Crossroads looks like it is carrying that lineage forward. If new protagonist Cielo is being set up to lose to him early on, the odds are that Lionel functions as a wall in the story, or as someone working for whoever is pulling the strings. That part will have to wait for an announcement.
Is Lionel the son of Lion Rafale? What Sega has officially said
As of October 30, 2026, there is no official announcement from Sega about how Lionel and Lion Rafale are related. The shared surname and the shared Praying Mantis Kung Fu have led people to assume he is Lion’s son, but that is not written anywhere in official setting material.
Lion Rafale debuted in 1994’s Virtua Fighter 2 as a French Praying Mantis Kung Fu practitioner, a rich kid whose father was a businessman. If Crossroads is set on a timeline where the cast has aged, there is nothing strange about Lion having a son. Dengeki Online pointed out that the dialogue and the look on his face in the trailer carry a “rebellion against a parent,” reading him as a young man whose parent is so towering that his own strength never gets acknowledged.
I think the son theory is the natural read too. But at June’s showcase, Pai Chan turned up working in a restaurant, and Akira and Jacky were only hinted at through a mural that came to life. This is a game that has been careful about holding the legacy cast back, so the likely policy is that Lionel’s link to Lion gets revealed in the main story and stays unspoken for now. I understand the urge to call it “all but confirmed,” but until the official line lands, it stays at “appears to be.”
Which characters have been revealed so far?
On the new side we have Cielo Salinas, the one named member of the four protagonists, masked fighter Bakunawa Killer, the series’ first Korean female character (name not announced), and now Lionel Rafale. On the legacy side, Pai Chan and Wolf are confirmed to appear, while Akira and Jacky have only been suggested through the mural sequence.
| Character | Category | What we know |
|---|---|---|
| Cielo Salinas | New / protagonist | Young man with an undercut. One of the four protagonists |
| Bakunawa Killer | New | Masked fighter. Sharp attacks that look like Chinese martial arts |
| Korean female character | New | Name and style not announced. Only artwork of her feet has been shown |
| Lionel Rafale | New | Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Trailer released October 30 |
| Pai Chan | Legacy | Confirmed to appear. Shown working at a restaurant in an event scene |
| Wolf Hawkfield | Legacy | Confirmed for the roster |
| Akira Yuki | Legacy | Hinted at via the animated mural. Not officially announced |
| Jacky Bryant | Legacy | Hinted at via the animated mural. Not officially announced |
Cielo is still the only one of the four protagonists with a name attached. There has been no official word on whether Bakunawa Killer and the Korean female character are among the other three. Lionel is introduced as the one doing the overwhelming to Cielo, so it reads more naturally to take him as a villain or a third party who cuts across the four protagonists’ story than as one of the four himself.
The way the legacy cast is being handled is the fun part. Pai is blended into the city as restaurant staff rather than a fighter, and Wolf has simply been declared part of the roster. Placing the Virtua Fighter cast as “residents of a city called Virasapara” is how Crossroads is built, and Lionel is also someone who “appeared” in that city. You can see the shape of it: outsiders arrive and shake the place up.
When does VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS come out, and on what platforms?
Release is planned for 2027, and as of October 2026 there is no official announcement of platforms. RGG Studio (the renamed Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio) is developing, with Sega publishing. The genre is a “fighting adventure” that fuses story-driven adventure with competitive fighting.

| Title | VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS |
| Release window | Planned for 2027 |
| Platforms | Not announced |
| Price | Not announced |

| Setting | Virasapara (a fictional Southeast Asian city) |

| Announced | June 5, 2026 (Summer Game Fest 2026) |
Virasapara is set up as a “city of fighting,” divided into districts such as a walled central quarter, an entertainment district and a resort area. In single player you walk the city to advance the story, and both one-versus-many brawls and one-on-one fighting-game matches break out. It is Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s city-building and Virtua Fighter’s 3D fighting packed into a single game.
The concerning part is that four months after the June reveal, there is still no platform list and no price. RGG Studio’s own STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is out ahead of it on January 15, 2027, so the real flow of Crossroads news will probably pick up after that. At the current pace of doling out one character at a time, platforms in the first half of 2027 and a release later that same year is the realistic shape of it. I am an Akira player myself and have never touched Lion. The one who used him was my friend Nagano, and if a day comes when I can throw that Praying Mantis Kung Fu on a stick again, that alone is enough for now. And yes, I’m still waiting for the day the Akira on that mural moves.

Summing up: Lionel Rafale is a new Praying Mantis Kung Fu fighter, and his link to Lion has not been announced
The trailer for Lionel Rafale, a new character in VIRTUA FIGHTER CROSSROADS, was released on October 30, 2026. His fighting style is Praying Mantis Kung Fu. He is a young fighter who has appeared in Virasapara, and he overwhelms protagonist Cielo in a street fight. He appears to be Lion Rafale’s son, but there has been no official announcement. Release is planned for 2027, platforms and price are not announced, and RGG Studio is developing. The characters revealed so far are Cielo, Bakunawa Killer, the Korean female character, Lionel, Pai and Wolf, while Akira and Jacky remain at the level of hints.
With Lionel’s arrival, it is close to clear that Crossroads is a game about the “next generation” of the legacy cast. Pai is a shop worker, Akira and Jacky are a mural, and the Rafale family gets a young man who looks a lot like a son. If you are going to depict a city more than 30 years on from Virtua Fighter 2, that sense of distance is the right call. What remains is when the official side says the word “son,” and when the platforms show up. The pace of announcements is slow, but everything that does come out hangs together.
Les jeux sont faits. The bets are placed. All that is left is to wait for 2027.
