The TV anime Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files (Biblia Koshodo no Jiken Techo) will begin airing in April 2027. CloverWorks is handling the animation and Mamoru Kanbe is directing. Riko Akechi voices Shioriko Shinokawa and Shunsuke Takeuchi voices Daisuke Goura, and on October 3, 2026 the production revealed four additional cast members along with the first trailer.

Eight and a half million copies in circulation. A TV drama in 2013, a live-action film in 2018. Every time En Mikami’s rare-book mystery gets adapted, the same argument breaks out: “that’s not how Shioriko looks.” Now Biblia is becoming an anime.

This article lays out the confirmed broadcast window, cast, and staff, then considers what the CloverWorks and Mamoru Kanbe pairing actually brings to this particular story, from the perspective of someone who has read the novels.

Let’s start with what is officially confirmed right now.

When does the Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files anime air, and who is making it?

It starts in April 2027, and CloverWorks is producing. The first announcement back in April 2026 only said “2027”; the October 3 update narrowed that to April. The broadcasters are unannounced as of October 2026.

The official site sums up the appeal of the source material like this.

The hugely popular rare-book mystery series, with over 8.5 million copies in circulation

For light literary fiction, 8.5 million copies is an outlier. Fifteen years after volume 1 arrived in 2011, and after a drama, a film, and a manga adaptation, new volumes are still coming. No other series has sold like this off a premise as unflashy as “mysteries about books.”

Who is in the Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files anime cast?

On top of the two leads, four more cast members were announced on October 3, 2026: Shioriko’s younger sister Fumika, the regular customer Shida, Kikuya Kasai, and Nao Kosuge — the people who drive the story across volumes 1 and 2.

Character Voice actor Role
Shioriko Shinokawa Riko Akechi Owner of Biblia Antiquarian Bookshop. Painfully shy, but unstoppable once the subject turns to books
Daisuke Goura Shunsuke Takeuchi A shop employee who physically cannot read print. The narrator
Fumika Shinokawa Reo Osanai Shioriko’s younger sister. A sociable high schooler, the exact opposite of her sibling
Shida Wataru Takagi A bookshop regular. A middle-aged man who calls himself a book scout
Kikuya Kasai Yohei Azakami A young man tied to the case in volume 1
Nao Kosuge Saeko Kamijo A high school girl involved in Shida’s request

The one to watch is Wataru Takagi as Shida. He has a voice that can swing from genial drunk to a man with no visible bottom, which makes him the ideal pick for a character who is clearly not just another regular. For Riko Akechi as Shioriko, the thing to listen for is how she handles those quiet, rapid-fire monologues about books.

What kind of story is Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files?

Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files is an “everyday mystery” series set in a used bookshop near Kita-Kamakura Station, where the owner, Shioriko Shinokawa, unravels puzzles surrounding rare books. Nobody gets murdered. What gets solved is the memory a previous owner left behind in a single volume.

The request in volume 1 concerns whether a signature in a grandmother’s copy of Natsume Soseki’s complete works is genuine. From the book’s condition, its printing, and the notes in its margins, Shioriko reconstructs the life of its owner. The core of the series isn’t the deduction itself — it’s the aftertaste of having touched someone’s secret through a book.

A history of adaptations, and the “Shioriko problem”

The series became a Fuji TV drama in 2013 (starring Ayame Gouriki and AKIRA) and a live-action film in 2018 (Haru Kuroki and Shuhei Nomura). The drama drew arguments before it even aired, because its Shioriko looked nothing like the novels’ “long-black-haired beauty.” An anime can simply animate the Shioriko from Hagu Koshijima’s original illustrations. That is the single biggest advantage this adaptation has.

To be honest about my concerns: this is a story where book trivia takes up most of the runtime, so the challenge is making a largely static conversation piece hold the screen. Do they visualize Shioriko’s monologues as images from inside the books, or let Kamakura’s scenery carry the pauses? That’s where Mamoru Kanbe’s skill gets tested.

Are CloverWorks and Mamoru Kanbe the right fit for Biblia?

My conclusion: yes, it’s a good match. CloverWorks is a studio that excels at shows built on quiet conversation carried by careful acting, as in the Rascal Does Not Dream series. Mamoru Kanbe is a director who builds emotional swings without leaning on flashy staging, as he did on Elfen Lied, So Ra No To, and Waiting in the Summer.

Character designer Jun Nakai and series composer Toshiya Ono also look like picks chosen not to break the source’s atmosphere. Takahiro Obata handles the music, and the key there will be whether sound can make a closed space like a used bookshop feel larger than it is.

…I told my skate crew I was excited for “the used bookstore anime” and got a round of blank stares. But this one lands even if you aren’t a book person. The way Shioriko reads people’s secrets out of their books is, frankly, a little frightening.

Summary: in April 2027, a Kamakura bookshop opens its doors

The TV anime Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files premieres in April 2027. CloverWorks is producing, Mamoru Kanbe is directing, Riko Akechi plays Shioriko Shinokawa, and Shunsuke Takeuchi plays Daisuke Goura. Reo Osanai, Wataru Takagi, Yohei Azakami, and Saeko Kamijo were announced as additional cast, and the first trailer is out now. The broadcasters are unannounced as of October 2026, so that’s the next thing to wait for.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

Arriving at an anime after two live-action attempts is kinder to readers than either of those adaptations, for one reason alone: it can animate the Shioriko from the original illustrations. CloverWorks plus Mamoru Kanbe is close to the optimal answer for a quiet conversation piece, and the only open worries are the broadcasters and the episode count.

You have six months. Read even just volume 1 and Shioriko’s first deduction should raise the hair on your arms.
