God of War: Laufey has slipped from February 16, 2027 to May 20, 2027. Santa Monica Studio announced the new date on November 4, 2026 (November 5 in Japan), pushing the game back by three months and four days. It remains a PS5 exclusive.

The reason given is that the team wants to “put a final polish on the game and bring out everything it can be.” Pricing holds steady too: $59 (tax included) for the standard edition and $65 (tax included) for the Digital Deluxe Edition. Pre-orders that opened on September 29 are still live, and the PS Store release date has already flipped over to May 20.

This is a brand-new entry starring Faye, the wife of Kratos, as she travels through Tokoyo no Kuni, the afterlife of the gods. It was revealed at a State of Play in June, got its February 16 date in July, and only started taking pre-orders at the end of September. Anyone who had blocked out early next year for a big one now has a calendar to rewrite.

Here’s the full picture: the new schedule, the studio’s statement, what each edition costs and includes, and what the delay means for pre-orders. Losing one of February’s highlights stings. But when a studio says it needs three more months to finish the job, waiting is the only move.

Start with the dates.

What’s the new God of War: Laufey release date? May 20, 2027, on PS5 only

The new release date is Thursday, May 20, 2027, three months later than the original February 16, 2027 target. The Japanese PS Store page has already been updated to show May 20, 2027, so the announcement and the storefront line up.

PS5 is still the only platform. There’s been no PC or PS4 announcement, and the delay did not come bundled with any new platforms.

One month from reveal to release date, two months from release date to pre-orders, five weeks from pre-orders to the delay. The information had been coming out at a steady clip, which is exactly why a three-month slide lands as a surprise.

Why was it delayed? Santa Monica Studio says it’s putting a final polish on the game

The stated reason is time to finish. Santa Monica Studio says it will use every remaining day to bring out the game’s full potential. Here is the statement posted to the official PlayStation X account.

Ever since we revealed God of War: Laufey this past June, we have been thrilled and deeply grateful to see how much anticipation there is for Faye’s journey through Tokoyo no Kuni. Creating a special gaming experience worthy of our fans’ passion and love, and the trust they place in Santa Monica Studio to deliver it, is something we will never take for granted. With that in mind, we have decided to move the release date of God of War: Laufey to Thursday, May 20, 2027. We will make the most of the time remaining before launch, putting a final polish on the game so that we can bring out everything it can be. Source:Official PlayStation X account

There’s no mention of a specific development problem, and nothing about added content. Taken at face value, “final polish” reads as time to refine what exists rather than time to pile more on.

The 2018 God of War and 2022’s Ragnarok both landed as remarkably solid releases. When that studio delays a game with “we can make this better” instead of “we can’t ship this,” count me on the welcoming side. A rushed February launch patched into shape afterward would be far worse.

What about price and editions? $59 standard, $65 Digital Deluxe, pre-order bonuses untouched

Pricing and edition lineup are identical to before the delay. The standard edition is $59, the Digital Deluxe Edition is $65, and upgrading from standard to Digital Deluxe costs $7. All figures are tax included and visible on the PS Store listing.

EditionPrice (tax included)Contents
Standard edition$59Base game
Digital Deluxe Edition$65Base game, digital mini art book, soundtrack, Dark Alchemy gear set, in-game resource pack
Upgrade to Digital Deluxe$7For standard edition owners
Pre-order bonus (all editions)—Final Wish armor set (cuirass and waist guard), Frank’s Golden Leaf cosmetic, in-game resource pack

The bonus armor set and cosmetic are presented as pre-order rewards, not early unlocks of gear you’d eventually earn by playing. Some people will cancel over the delay, but if you want the bonuses, the sensible play is to keep the pre-order parked and wait for May.

What happens if you already pre-ordered? Plus what to watch for before launch

As of November 5, 2026, there is no official guidance about pre-order cancellations or changes to bonus contents. PS Store pre-orders simply carry over to the new release date, and the bonus conditions are unchanged. If you reserved a physical copy at retail, it’s worth checking how your specific store is handling it.

What we know about the game itself is still what came out of the June reveal and the September pre-order launch. The protagonist is Laufey, the warrior who is Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, better known as Faye. She wakes in an unfamiliar land after death and pushes through Tokoyo no Kuni, the afterlife of the gods, to save her family. Her weapon changes shape to suit the situation, shifting from serpent to bow, as shown in the pre-order trailer.

Those three extra months are also three extra months of pre-release drip. With a game that was supposed to arrive right after New Year’s now landing in May, I expect fresh trailers and gameplay footage in the spring. That’s where we’ll find out how much of that “full potential” actually made it in.

The bottom line: God of War: Laufey hits PS5 on May 20, 2027 at $59

God of War: Laufey has been delayed from February 16, 2027 to May 20, 2027. The announcement came on November 5, 2026 via a Santa Monica Studio statement, and the reason is time for a final polish. It’s still PS5 only, and pricing holds at $59 for the standard edition and $65 for the Digital Deluxe Edition. The Final Wish armor set and Frank’s Golden Leaf pre-order bonuses are unchanged, and pre-orders remain open.

SPOTGEEKS VERDICT

A game that went from reveal to open pre-orders in six months just lost three of them with two and a half months left on the clock. The statement frames this as a delay for polish, not for added content. Given how Santa Monica Studio’s last two games turned out, there’s no reason to second-guess the call. If anything, stepping out of February’s traffic jam and landing alone in May should suit Faye’s story just fine.

I’ll wait the three months. In exchange, let May 20 be a finished walk through Tokoyo no Kuni.
